Gruss an Aachen may fade without afternoon shade but the flowers are still beautiful.

Bishop Darlington is a huge bush so it needs plenty of space. Here is a bush pic from the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden on May 1 with temps in the low 90's. The flowers are substantial with heavy petals and did not mind the heat at all.

Is there a pink gruss and a regular gruss ? I ask because in the gallery someone posted lovely pics of what they call pink gruss a Aachen and I want to get the correct one .

Excited to add this to my order . As for the bishop ... It's so big I may have to think on it . I've never had roses get so big and this is my first southern garden so I am not sure of how to work around such a big shrub ! :)

This is the closest I have to a full bush shot of Dainty Bess. It's from the Huntington this past October. It wasn't a mature shrub, but the canes didn't seem quite as rigidly upright as many HTs and it was blooming well.

There is a Pink Gruss an Aachen, and a difference between the two.

I would love to have both roses, but might only order one for spring to complete my 7 rose limit. It's so hard to choose just one.

I had Dainty Bess but shovel pruned her because mine just never produced much after 5 yrs. beautiful bloom but replaced with Carding Mill who blooms tons. Mine was tall and skinny.
Someone posted a pic of both Gruss. I have both and love them. They are beautiful and so feminine. If you have room I'd get both Gruss. Lol

Pink Gruss an Aachen is a color sport of the original Gruss an Aachen -- and it has long been sold in error as 'Irene Watts.' It is NOT Irene Watts, and it is probable that that China Rose is lost. It's lovely in its own right.

Bishop Darlington is -- as others have said -- ginormous.

It is a beautiful rose which, in my Coastal SoCal conditions, is completely disease-free (NO spray). It displays quite a color range, because it's very changeable. I love it, and wouldn't want to be without it.

I read a clever comment to the effect that the Bishop, a modest fellow, uses those incurving petaloids to hide his "modesty."

But it SHOULD be noted that the real Bishop Darlington -- an Episcopal Bishop, was a poet -- and a great promoter of women's right to vote.

I had a client in Santa Fe that had a Dainty Bess 8' tall, very slender, in quite a bit of shade, covered in blooms spring and fall. I'm growing her here, but she is still a baby, tho she is coming along nicely.
