I think sublime would be the right word for that rose, front and back. Love that delicate coloring. Lady Roberts is lovely too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a garden that's less than presentable. I wish I could just fast-forward to the spring flush and skip this painful period.

Jackie, your roses are exquisite and envy inducing, but the romantic view out your window is daydream producing (as in, "I wish I were there, gazing down from her window", and not in my sodden mess). I'm sure your garden is far lovelier than "presentable". Diane

Kippy - I have three AOs. The old old one (90+ years) is about 8 ft tall and wide - it is in partial shade, so is always throwing canes up trees, etc to get more light. The second one grows on a rose folly in the sun - it stays about 6 ft tall. The third one is the one we have trained up against the wall of our house. It makes it to the porch railing (and over it!). They are much easier to train than most teas I have, so I think you would be able to keep it under control.

I got a Lady Roberts, and seeing as how AO does fine in partial sun, planted it in partial sun also. Nothing. It is dwindling from its highest height of about 10 inches after 3 years. I think I had better move it.

My Anna Olivier is about 3 years old if I recall correctly, maybe 4, and it has not yet taken off. It is planted in a gopher ridden area, though in a root-protective basket. I expect that the roots which grow out of the basket are regularly pruned and so it will never grow to its full potential. Still, it is lovely and I enjoy it very much.

I grow Lady Roberts as well, though it has only been in the ground a couple of years. Same situation. Healthy, but not growing very fast.

Jackie's garden is a living testimony to the value of a garden generations in one family. I have never seen anything else like it here in the United States.

Jackie -- I suspect your A.O. wasn't in shade, when it was young.

Jeri - the old old one, you mean? Yes, it was not in shade at all - that part of our garden was manicured - lots of paths, and lots of roses. The tea roses prevailed, but the HTs had mostly disappeared by the time we got here (I killed the one remaining HT in that area when we first moved in, by digging it up and moving it - no idea what I was doing). There were no trees around the AO, at the beginning - we have pictures of the lot - it was bare when the ancestors moved in. The garden bushes (there is a huge old barberry right next to the old AO, and some other garden "shrub" on the other side which has attained amazing proportions), and the trees (it is now growing below and into a mature privet) all grew up around the AO. I guess it just had a better plan for coping with that than the other roses did. Recently I pruned back the shrubs right near it so that they no longer were smothering it, and pruned and fed and mulched it - waiting to see what happens next - such a fun adventure!

Anyway, I do have to move that Lady Roberts before it disappears completely. It is growing right next to the AO which is climbing up our porch - I thought it would be happy there, but it is NOT.

The L.R. in the Sacramento City Cemetery is in good sun, so I think that's likely the problem.

I had one here that was growing well until the horrible heat hit us last summer. I lost 3-4 roses then.

I moved Lady Roberts yesterday - into a very large pot in much more sun. It is down to about 10 sad looking leaves. I am hoping it will recuperate - if it does, we will see about figuring out a permanent place for it in the garden.

I think I will put hellebores into the planter where LR was -
