Sometimes it has been hard to describe the normal look of this rose (as opposed to the 15% of the time when it is some other color - tea roses have such good imaginations!). One of my plants is growing up our ground floor basement wall - the top of it is at the level of our porch. I was just walking by on the porch when I noticed that several blooms were showing off their coloring from ABOVE, so I took a picture - here it is. Buff colored, with outside petals marked with a lovely dark pink/brick color.

I can't believe that this rose is hardly in commerce! I have given several cuttings of it to Vintage Gardens over the years, and they did sell it, but only propagated to order, and of course now "sigh" that is no longer available.

I checked the US nurseries which HMF says have it. One said it was unavailable (and the picture that one displayed might have been the "all yellow, all of the time" imposter which got into commerce somehow in the UK and Europe). So, does anyone know of a nursery which carries the real rose?

I told a story on here of three rooted cuttings I had for 2 years, having completely forgotten who they were. One turned out to be Cl Crimson Glory, one was a white sport of Margo Koster, and as of a few days ago I still didn't know who the other one was, although it was obviously a tea rose. It is in a big pot now, but the deer have been disbudding it as soon as any new growth or tiny buds appeared (the deer must be following Kim's advice on how to make baby roses stronger). Anyway, one branch had grown under another bush (no doubt to get away from the deer), and yesterday I noticed it and pulled it out. Ha! Three identifiable buds - it is Anna Olivier!

So, if any of you out there are nurserypersons, or know any, who would like to have this plant so that AO can go back into commerce, please speak up! This plant is free to any nursery - should be in warm weather. If no nursery wants it, it is available to any rose growing person who is willing to drive to Marin County to pick it up.

This rose is beautiful even from the back. I love roses that have a melange of colors and look different at different seasons or for whatever reason. So nice of you, Jackie, to try to make this rose available again. I wish I lived closer to you.

Maybe if Burling is interested we can pass that plant down the coast and get it to her in November at the Ventura Society meeting?

I am still debating going to the Heirloom fest in Petaluma, but a friend-and serious gardener-might be driving down from further north for an open garden day here and I am planning on the Ventura group meeting.

(Burling has the rose listed on hmf but not sure if it is in stock currently

Presuming the "emeryville" location is that of Emeryville, CA, I am in the same climate you are in the Bay Area. I have 3 bushes of Anna Olivier, one of which is over 80 years old (it is the cultivar Vintage Gardens got their Anna Olivier from). It is my very favorite rose of the 100+ I have. It grows in the shade, in sun, and is very healthy. Usually a beautiful peach/cream with brick color on the back of the outside petals, it can also sometimes have flowers that are very pale yellow or very pale pink. It blooms continuously in the sun, and repeats in moderate shade. My very old bush is huge (say, 15 feet wide by 10-12 feet high), but I have one I rooted that I keep pruned to a flat shape about 2 feet deep by 5 feet wide (it is planted on our house right next to the driveway) by about 8 feet tall, and it seems happy, and blooms prolifically. I would highly recommend this rose!

Last time I looked Vintage Gardens was selling the correct buff version, but only as a rose that they will specialty root for you if you order it - so it takes a while. They got theirs from cuttings from an old plant in my garden (at the time Gregg told me that the correct version was not in commerce in No America). The Historic Sacramento Cemetery has a plant which is still marked with its study name of "Schmidt's Buff Giant" - they have plant sales a few times a year, maybe you could convince them to root it for sale. If you ever get to No Cal I would be glad to give you cuttings - I have 3 plants of it now in my garden - the 90 plus year old original, and two that I rooted from it. jackie

On balance, after reading the above, I think I will be potting this when it arrives - if I can keep SdLV happy in a pot for a season, I'm sure EdL or AO, whatever it is, will be ok. Reason being, I want a yellow for the original spot I'd intended. If it's orange/buff that is OK too, I just don't want to have to dig it up to move it to the orange beds. I confess, I'm less and less willing to put faith in Beales inventory, the more I read. Don't have room, or I'd do what Marlorena suggests and acquire both roses from Roseraie du Desert as well for comparison. A project for the future perhaps.

Congratulations Jackie! Your Lady Roberts bloom is lovely - on my monitor it closely resembles the colour of my Safrano blooms at the moment. My Lady Roberts (purchased in May 2014) was extremely variable in colour last year - everything from verging on white to deepest pink! Rather a shock, however, here's the colour that it produced at the beginning of May 2015 - My Anna Olivier hasn't flowered yet this spring but she does have lots of buds - if she is half as beautiful as your AO bloom above, I'll be very happy. Thanks! Their web site is "under construction" right now, but I will contact them and see if there is any interest (and if they already have it!).

I love this rose, and it is pretty obvious why it was regarded as one of the best, right into the early 20th Century. Why it was lost from commerce, I do not know.

Oh, yeah -- right -- Tea Roses are "not vigorous."

All I can say is that this has long been my favorite Tea rose. I don't like to indulge in breathless puffery--if that isn't an oxymoron--but I'll make an exception: This rose is exquisite and gorgeous. I also have its nearly-as-good sport 'Lady Roberts' (the pink in 'Anna Olivier' makes AO just a little bit more intriguing). Sangerhausen had at one time a 'Climbing Anna Olivier', which as you might imagine was at the top of my want list. Unfortunately, it was ultimately reported that, hm, either their specimen(s) had died or were found to have been mis-identified (if the latter, I'd still be interested in whatever it was that came close to being a climbing AO). But I'd be tempted to advise folks that, if you grow only one Tea, grow 'Anna Olivier'.

I am in the Bay area and if you are still looking to give it away I have my hand out. I won a silent auction three or more years ago at Sac cemetery for Lady Roberts and love her but I have always wanted Anna Olivier. Secretly I hoped that LR would revert so I could get them both but if you need a home for AO and the nursery already has it, let me know.

Hi. I just received Anna Olivier from Roses Unlimited in South Carolina. GORGEOUS healthy, clean plant.
Pat runs a fabulous nursery. NOW I'm going to have to check out Lady Roberts.

I hope Burling is interested since this rose seems to be very popular and do well on this coast. She is doing a budding Demo in November at the Ventura groups event.

My friend lives in Ukiah, but commutes to Vallejo (I think) and her hubby, who is very much interested in horticulture works on the road in that whole area so if Burling is interested, pretty sure we can make the transfer work.

Kippy, Priority Mail works in California in about two days. Mail them Monday and she'll have them Wednesday. You'd be surprised how much you can put in a medium box and still ship it for less than Flat Rate! Kim
