Canada is the only "foreign" country capable of exporting to the US without your requiring an import permit from the USDA. Obtaining the import permit is a pain in the neck, but costs nothing more than time, energy and physical travel to your nearest USDA office to physically prove, IN PERSON, you are who you say you are simply to be permitted to apply for the permit. California didn't charge to be inspected to insure you have the appropriate room to hold your imports in quarantine, but there are multiple charges for EACH semi annual inspection for the full quarantine period which can run from one to up to three years, two on average. There are mileage chargesbased upon how far from the most local office you are and an hourly charge for inspection. Those could be uncomfortably high if you're too far from the most local office, but the actual inspection and treatment of the physical plants as they pass through import inspection can be MANY hundreds of dollars JUST to move them through and inspect them.

Then, don't expect to receive the Grade 1 bare root you might get from Canada. No material is permitted to enter the US greater than 10 mm in thickness at its thickest part. That means you will be doing well to receive band sized, bare rooted plants for your high prices from over seas, then you have to hope you can keep them alive after the length of time they've been in transit and everything they have endured in inspection and treatment. It USED to be easier, less expensive and a lot of fun to import. Alas, those days are LONG gone. Kim

..I'm always looking at the roses they grow in the U.S and wishing I could get some... I didn't know we could import, even at a price....
...one thing about the E.U. is that we don't have any problems importing all around it seems.... just as easy as ordering locally....giving us immense choice but at the same time, making this a most expensive hobby.... a few clicks and another lot on the way...

There is at least one forum member (prettypetals) in the USA who ordered and RECEIVED roses from Fils Roses. There's some doubt as to their route through and time in customs, but they did arrive in good shape. See her comments in the thread linked below.

I don't know about present regulations but in 2011 it wasn't difficult to import roses from the US and not very expensive either. A friend took the trouble to order for a number of Swedish roselovers to spread the cost of shipping and the phytosanitary certificate. I paid 433 SEK (now 52 USD) for 4 roses including my share of the shipping and the cost of the certificate. It was even cheaper in 2011 because the dollar/krona exchange rate was lower then. There were no added costs in Sweden. Regulations may well be stricter now.

My American Radiance in its first year and still in a pot. It hasn't done so well after that.

I'll have to check the Rogue Valley site again. I was under the impression that it was a lot more expensive than in Mariannese's experience (though the fact that it was a group order, with shared expenses, may well have helped cut down the price). And I admit I am very dubious about how well the plants could deal with the long shipping process, etc. I remember the nursery stating clearly that they could make no promises or guarantees,so part of the issue is not only it's simple do-ability, but whether it's actually worth doing. Sure, I'd love to have a Peggy Martin, a Climbing Pinkie, etc, in my garden, but I'd want healthy, thriving ones,not weaklings that would never really take off!
