Name That Plant!

trying to identify this berry.

it resembles a blue berry in color and is purple-ish on the inside. I have found a few of these plants near my wild rasberries. Can anyone identify what they might be? It is January and winter is full force so I am surprised they are still on the plant.

Polygonatum commutatum, just a guess without any more info than u have provided. Good find

Definitely not Polygonatum commutatum: Solomon seal berries hang from delicate stalks, not the thick pedicels in your photo.

It looks to me like privet (Ligustrum), a shrub which is often used for garden hedges. Some privets are deciduous, while others are evergreen. Click on the second photo on this page for a photo with berries:

In response to the above post: Of course you can buy the plants, everything is available online, but when is the last time you've seen the berries for sale at the supermarket or even farmer's market? Instead you see all that disgusting underripe produce from across the country. I do agree with your comment: "I don't find them any more invasive than other raspberries would be"... thanks glenn From the gardeners standpoint, they're certainly no more invasive than raspberry, and not even close to blackberry in this respect. The wineberry is ecologically very similar to other brambles, it just happens to be non-native and successful in the Eastern US, which means people are either not familiar with it or being taught to fear it, and its wonderful berries are under-utilized and under-appreciated.

I need help from experienced gardeners because I'm a newbie so to speak. I'm trying to improve my harvest for blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, currants (red & black), and strawberries for next year. The internet is full of all kinds of fertilizers; however I don't want to use any chemical nor animal (organic) fertilizers, so no blood meal or bone meal to name a few. Right now I'm thinking of buying coco-coir and vermicompost (worm casting) for my fruits. I already have plenty of coffee grounds and wood chips to make the soil acidic enough. Would they be worth buying? And how much should I use? Does anyone also know of a full chart of which vegetables and fruits require an acid/alkaline soil?

Considering what we would be looking at if we removed them... Id rather have them. Atleast for now. I wouldn't want to remove them untill I could replace them with something else. Our yard is fairly large and we basically had to start from scratch. Eventually all the natural areas will be cleared(except the trees) and replanted but it will take lots of time and money. Im focused on other areas right now.

It looks like Winterberry Holly, Ilex verticillata. That's not backed up by any evidence except that's what it looks like to me and I would expect it to be fairly common in NY state. They are largish, forest understory shrubs. WW Here is a link that might be useful: Winterberry holly

Agree it could well be Privet. Not Polyganatum. Any chance of a picture of the actual plant?

They might be Virginia creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, a native woody vine that has bright red autumn leaves that you might remember seeing last fall.

India Hawthorn berries?

Indian hawthorn berries have a round flower scar (not sure what the technical term is) at the end of the fruit. The berries in the OP's photo don't have that, so they're definitely not Indian hawthorn. [I say "Indian" rather than "India" because that's the name that was used when we had them in California 50+ years ago.]

Furthermore -- just went outside to look -- the stems in the OP's photo look a lot like the Japanese privets planted by the Previous Owners. (No photos as the only 4 berries I could find are essentially microscopic.)

Another vote here for Privet. Pretty common and the berries hang on a long time.
