Name That Plant!

Please help identify shrub with orange berries

Please help me identify this shrub/tree... Its evergreen, it has orange and yellow berries that grow along the stem. in the late summer and fall it gets tiny bell shaped cream flowers that have brown spots. The flowers have a strong jasmine like scent. We have four of them growing in our wild areas. Ive searched all over and cant find any answers. I would very much appreciate your thoughts on what this may be.

Elaeagnus. It may be E. pungens. Can be invasive in many areas including where I live.

Yep. Elaeagnus pungens. Used alot over here for coastal planting.

It's not Malpighia glabra -- I just looked that up, and its leaves are too smooth and round and glossy. I wish I had a photo, but I saw it last fall and didn't have a camera. Now I have seedlings, about an inch tall! Would a photo of those help? I should also mention that the berries are the size of holly berries and very orange, not reddish. I think they were in clusters on the stem.

Red Elder and Red Alder are two different shrubs. Elderberry produces red berries that turn black, so keep an eye on your shrubs. Red Elder is sometimes a name used for the Rowan Tree or the Mountain Ash, which fruit in the fall. Yours are likely Red Elderberry, Sambucus racemosa L. The literature shows it fruits from late July into August. The Black or Common Elderberry should be coming into fruit soon too; good for jelly and wine, but very bitter when uncooked!

Friends have small children! Must know what these berries are because small children make poor decisions! ==>>> fill small snack baggies with goldfish crackers ... tell the kids NEVER to eat anything in the yard... and to bring the baggie back when its empty.. for more ... its much easier to teach the crumb muncher ... as compared to denuding your entire yard .... most likely ... you will never remove everything in the yard that might hurt a child .... heck.. even if they eat enough grass ... they will be trotting around the yard ... but you are right.. these types of berries are what is called in the law .. an attractive nuisance .... they attract attention ... ken

Hello Oboedire, is the second one Solanium laciniatum; Kangaroo Apple, you might need to Google it to see the variations as the pic doesn't show the petiole junction at the fruit. Again try Google for this one; sandpaper fig. I know that the fruit grow along the branches.

We have four of them growing in our wild areas.

That would seem to indicate that the birds dropped those seeds. It is invasive in the southeastern US. You should consider removing those just as you would remove other invasives like Chinese privet and English ivy.

Thank you both so much! Ive been trying to figure it out for two years now... I think they look great in our natural areas. The scent floats all the way to our porch, which I love.

Considering what we would be looking at if we removed them... Id rather have them. Atleast for now. I wouldn't want to remove them untill I could replace them with something else. Our yard is fairly large and we basically had to start from scratch. Eventually all the natural areas will be cleared(except the trees) and replanted but it will take lots of time and money. Im focused on other areas right now.
