holiday cacti on clearance

Anyone else get any holiday cacti this year on clearance? I got one (probably red) Christmas cactus 75% off! (Also save your poinsettias! They make great little houseplants!)

I havnt got any (yet!) but there all on clearance for really cheap at Walmart and stuff for like 2 bucks. Also a Rona by me had Norfolk Island Pines in a 10" pot for 3 dollars! Wish I had to right place for one.. Oh well....

Yes, they have similar requirements. Keep in mind that the resting period for the Rhipsalidopsis/Hatiora/Rhipsalis is a little different than for the Schlumbergeras. If you get a big enough pot, throw in a few hanging small Rhipsalis (not some thug like R. teres) and you will have a nice planter.

It's much better to root them as they are, whether it's a Thanksgiving cactus (which that is) or a CC or an Easter. Really ideal cuttings are those that branch out, like a couple of yours are there, but the non-branching should do fine. With branching cuttings, rather than burying just the very ends, I personally tend to bury the cuttings in the soil so that they're slightly covered up to where the segment branches out. That may not be the best description, but what would be emerging from the soil would be the branching part of the cutting. This post was edited by teatree on Tue, Feb 19, 13 at 16:51

Ive had them on the shady size of the gazebo (idk what the specifics of a gazebo are, we just call it that. We'll say 15 x 15 ft. open air structure comparable to a porch). I don't know if they were inside or out before they moved here. I read about the forest soil (and Im so new I don't even know for sure but I would guess I tend to overwater) so I haven't let them get "dry" since i got them. Im noticing everything needs less and less watering and I'm worried about over watering the house plants so I've been on the cautious side trying to wait until it looks a little drier but it never seems to look different, neither do the plants. I can say that the soil is visibly still damp after not watering for about 6 days (I think). I'll go out and get pictures of the tops, maybe that will help some.

Much to my surprise, I didn't see any Schlums this year in Lowes or HD.

Yeah I saw one once in this hotel and it was at least 25 feet tall
I'd try one if I had the place for it but I don't think I have the humidity it needs.
I think I'm going to miss all the sales as it's been way to cold to go out anywhere
Oh well I guess I'll have to wait until next year

None here on Long Island.

I went looking at my favorite local green houses, but only saw 2 at different places for about 30$.

It was more than I wanted to pay, but both had woody growth below and fairly tight green growth above.

I might still pop for one, but I was hoping to catch one on sale. I was also hoping to luck into a true christmas cactus or even an easter variety.
