Can I topdress over dead grass?
Comments (3)I happen to disagree. The dead grass clumps wont do a thing for the new grass coming in. Its dead, there's nothing for the seed to grab onto. It may well be grueling, but the old dead grass should be removed prior to any topdressing and reseeding. You can rent sod cutters at the local rent-all and remove it that way. Give the area a good raking to remove any debris ..dead clumps of grass, pebbles and any loose grass that will in any case not regenerate. Level the area, look to its drainage and topdress, levelling again by raking and then if you decide, roll it and fill in any depressions or other areas needing fixing. After the seeding, you may wish to roll again...lightly to put the seed in better contact with the soil. Water accordingly and your lawn should come in very well....See MoreWinter kill dead Bermuda grass - how can I revitalize it?
Comments (1)There are many approaches. One is to let the grass you have grow in to fill. That might take all season. Another is to pull up the occasional piece of dead sod and replace it with new sod. That will speed up the process of filling in. Another is to pull up the sod and living grass and apply seed on the bare soil. You should know that bermuda seed is all based on common bermuda. Bermuda sod is based on a hybrid bermuda. They don't look alike when you have them together. Sodded bermuda is a clearly superior turf. They don't look very good together, but if you have mostly seeded varieties, then you won't really see the hybrid mixed in. Another possible way is to stolonize. That will be a lot of work. Search this forum for that topic. A guy from Australia wrote in and described it. Once you have grass established, you should not ever need to aerate or add sand - that is if you are taking care of it properly. Aerating would not hurt anything, but adding sand can be a problem. Someone else might write in with other ideas. I would suggest doing a little more reading and make a decision. We'd be glad to help you do whatever you decide to do....See MoreCan you use a Sod-Cutter on dead grass/dirt?
Comments (2)My father in law, just used a sod cutter 2 weeks ago or so. He had to move his grass to level it with a new patio that got installed. Anyways, the spots of his that he had dead grass, cut and pulled up just like the grass cuts. The dirt Was moist, so maybe thats why it stuck together as though it had grass growing in it, it did have roots all through it though imagine that was more of why it worked than the dirt being wet. His soil was heavy clay....See Morecircular patches dead grass in new sod
Comments (3)Most likely brown patch since your sod is mostly tall fescue. When you lay sod in the summer, especially TF, you have a catch 22 situation in that you have to water it often to keep it alive and allow it to root, but at the same time constant leaf wetness often leads to brown patch in hot weather. Unfortunately most "landscapers" don't consider this, and it could have been prevented with an application of fungicide after the sod was laid. Brown patch affected lawns often come back in the fall, unless the disease affects the crowns, then you can lose grass. 90/10 usually means you have some KBG mixed in with your TF, in which case the KBG will spread to fill in bare areas over time....See MoreGoGreen123
