What seeds are you starting this year?

I am already planning what seeds I will be starting this year and I am anxiously awaiting for the time to plant them. I know it is too early yet but I have ordered some. I am going to plant lots of wave petunias this year since I had such good luck with them last year. Also will be planting impatiens, coleus, New Guinea Impatiens, Lisianthus, Bishop's Children Dahlias (these also did really well last year) and probably some Zinnia.

These are the petunia seeds that I already have:

Rosy Dawn Easy Wave Petunia
Burgundy Velour Easy Wave Petunia
Tidal Wave Silver Petunia
Plum Pudding Mix Easy Wave Petunia
Opposites Attract Easy Wave Petunia
African Sunset Petunia
Baby Duck Petunia

Planning and placing my seed order is actually on my to-do list for the day - what a timely post :0)

I know for sure I will be starting:

* New Guinea impatiens (Divine series - lavender, maybe another color too)

* Zinnia (Uproar Rose and probably Purple Prince)

* Browallia (Million Bells series, the medium blue)

* Vinca (lavender, can't recall the series name, I have to look at the old seed packet, and the Polka Dot ones - white with red eye)

* Impatiens (Super Elfin Blue Pearl and White)

* Petunia (Celebrity Sky Blue and White - just a few for the scent and sentimental reasons)

* Vegetables and herbs: Cherry tomatoes, eggplant, daikon radish, basil, green beans, and maybe a few other things as well)

I will probably grow more than this, but like I said I still have to plan it all out.

Hi dapper - Have you read through all the FAQ's here? They will be big help to you so I linked them below or you can just click on the link at the top of this forum's front page. You'll also want to read through many of the posts already here for even more info. The long stems ( called "leggy") are due to insufficient light. Do you have a light set-up ready to use? have read don't put any under lights from a flat and take the plastic cover off until all have sprouted. Not sure where you read this but all the seeds will never germinate at the same time. So once several of the seeds in the container begin to sprout you need to remove the humidity cover and put the container under the lights. You can also terminate the bottom heat at that time. Heat is used for germination only, not for growing on. Some of the remaining seeds will still germinate but if you wait for all or most to do so, the first ones are already way too leggy and you run the risk of developing damp-off (see FAQ) and killing the seedlings. The leggy ones will need to be transplanted deeply, to just below the bottom leaves, in another container - usually individual containers that you plan to use for growing them until ready to transplant to the garden. If you don't have cell-packs you can use small coffee or plastic drink glasses with drain holes punched in the bottom. Begin to ration the water now too - the soil can be allowed to lightly dry out between waterings - too little water is better than too much. ;) Give them 16-18 hours of light a day and keep the lights close to the plants. Once the plants begin to develop their true leaves you'll want to give them a mild feeding of a diluted 1/4 strength liquid fertilizer unless the potting mix you are using already has fertilizer in it. calistoga, Thank you for the information! I'm thinking I will just use the bay windows for grown African violets I have and for rooting African violet leaves(it may take longer but that's fine :)) I definitely think I will try a flat or two of seeds indoors but I think I'm gonna mainly focus on winter-sowing this year with milk jugs and also purchasing a patio greenhouse to start things in winter too. Has anyone had experience with those shelf patio greenhouses? It basically is the same as the milk jug method I assume. its a mini greenhouse which I can afford! lol also trying to find various containers to plant seeds in to save some moola for other new gardening gadgets this year! and digdirt, not really but thanks for the link so I can! I printed lots of info on winter-sowing out yesterday and which seeds to winter-sow during the months so now I have more reading material! love learning! Thank You! ~Michael

Keep in mind that it can take several years for some of them to go from a seedling to a mature plant I think the first link will keep yah busy enough until someone comes by and suggest Something pre-grown Yeah it only gets easier after that.... With all the potting mixes and cool container ideas you can see on just about every thread on the forum and then some added lighting. I'm using May 15th as my outdoors planting date (fingers crossed). I started petunias, geranium, begonia, pentas & abutilon already but don't have much germinated yet & I'm using a heating mat this year. I made a list of my seeds this year & noted when to start them so all I do is check my notebook every week to see if I need to start anything. Around March 22 I'll start balsam, calendula, dianthus, tithonia & coleus. I heard somewhere that after a winter like this one, with prolonged very cold temps, the summer will be much cooler than normal. So I may use black plastic to warm the soil this year esp for the tomatoes & peppers.

I already started several varieties of coleus from seed under lights. I have tons of saved seeds from Zinnias Purple Prince and Uproar Rose that have become mixed. Also Profusion Pink and Zahara Starlight Rose. I'm going to try Tithonia again, but last spring was so cold that it didn't start blooming much before frost was threatening. I'm sure I'll come up with more annuals by planting time, but that's what I'm planning so far.

Indoors I have started 3 snapdragons from the aroma series,ageratum 'blue horizon',white begonias,and an ornamental grass. Outside for winter sowing,I have larkspur, purple poppies and native lupine.

Other seeds: 'Edwardian',apricot 'profusion',and 'Envy' zinnias,and a deep purple alyssum called 'oriental nights'. Big plans this winter...I hope I have the energy come spring!

Lots and lots of Japanese Maples. I collected several thousand seeds last autumn and stratified them all winter. They should start poking their heads through any time now.
