We do need to keep this going, I think. It has been so much fun for us all.

The bookmarks keep pouring in, and I am so glad we did this - it has been more fun than I ever imagined. Instead of putting the bookmarks in my regular pile, I am looking at my favorite books and matching the bookmark to the book. This is surprisingly easy.

Drum roll please, Ladies and Gentlemen, I now reveal to you the contents of the fabulous box that wendy sent to me: * 3 (three) boas - one pink, one plue and one purple - my husband has been out of town for 3 days . I think I'll dress up in feathers for his return ;) lol * A wooden caddy with roosters - thanks! * A metal bird that is also a bird house - this is really cute. I'll but it in the woods with my new plants. * A crow scarecrow pic (for the fall wreath I just made for my front door) * A flower pick * A magnet notepad - for my refrigerator... I'm always looking for a scap of paper to write a note * 2 sets of work gloves - I really needed these * A bag of jiffy pellets (always useful) * A white pillar candle with purple flowers * A beautiful green petal candle dish with tea light - now on my coffee table * 3 tiny flower pot candles - too cute * lemon verbena home fragrance ( love that smell!) * A big bag of small narcissus bulbs ( almost bought these for myself last week) * 4 plants variegated hosta "minuteman" variegated creeping fig lingularia the rocket Cimicifuga racemosa (Black Cohosh) Wow Wendy wow. As I said " I gots the bestest box"!. My daughter and I had so much fun pulling all the gifts out of the box. The natives look a little sad. But I've already planted them and they will get lots of TLC. I do love everything in my box so much. You certainly puts lots of thought into that box and saved the best for last. Thank you. Well, I just got Vic good. I found her on ebay and wouldn't tell her WHO I was and made her guess. By golly she got it right too, first try! Ain't SHE a smart cookie? Well played Ms. Vic! Now who's a smarty? HEHE Vic you asked me how SO was doing on the smoking he has not had an actual cig. since Nov 12. BUT he is using the Nicorette gum. I hope he can really quit this time. This is the longest I have known him to go without one, and NOT breaking down and getting one. We also found out yesterday at a follow up visit to his reg. Doc. that he DID in fact have a mild heart attack. She said they where not SURE WHEN it happened but it shows up that it did. Well WE know for a FACT that is the day (Nov. 12) it happened because he had never experienced anything like the pain before and he also hurt in his chest for almost a week afterwards. He had just had some test a few months before to look to see what if anything build up was there and at that time there were so signs of a heart attack. So YES the 12th IS when it happened. I am just glad is wasn't severe and he made it home from where he was and we were able to get him to the hospital. So, yes I was sort of freaking after we heard the news and still am a little, I haven't been able to sit down an calmly talk to him about our future and what he needs to do now to take care of himself and make sure it doesn't happen again. However, when I think I can talk without breaking down we will be discussing some options, and what-if's in case there is a next time. WHICH I HOPE there isn't, but we do have to talk about it at any rate. ANYWAY, Bunny, I still haven't gotten my act together... I promise I will. It maybe a little late, but I will get your 'prize' out to you. I feel like such a slacker! I'm sorry. Kym has her hands full with all her Secret Santa swap stuff, but I can tell you her kids ages are girl 16 and boy 14! I have insight...hehe, actually I have her questionnaire...HEHE, that is cheating now ain't it? Ok, ladies I will tell you. I will be posting a game in the next week or maybe 2. When I decide what the prize will be and then I will post something. I have to decide what the prize will be before hand and then I have to decide what I want the game to be! Something hard or something that can be found online! Well, I am either going to turn in or go play a game, it depends on how heavy my eyelids get in the next 30 min. or so. :) Fran

Holiday Eating Tips - For The Sane I hate aspects of this time of year. Not for its crass commercialism and forced frivolity, but because it's the season when the food police come out with their wagging fingers and annual tips on how to get through the holidays without gaining 10 pounds. 1. About those carrot sticks. Avoid them. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls. 2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. Like fine single-malt scotch, it's rare. In fact, it's even rarer than single-malt scotch. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnogaholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas! 3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat. 4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission. 5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello? Remember college? 6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog. 7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. You can't leave them behind. You're not going to see them again. 8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day? 9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, after all, have some standards. 10. And one final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread tips. Start over. But hurry! Cookieless January is just around the corner.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and suggestions. I had not thought about the template issue, but many of the quilters will select a pattern from Quilter's Cache and some of those involve using a template to cut the fabric. I guess if you have no idea what a template is, take a look at some of those patterns. If you do not think you can make a block that uses templates, that will be another thing I will add to the list. It really is not difficult though so consider that you might be able to do it even if you have not done that before. The main thing is that when you print out the template, it will tell you the size the sample should be and check that. If it is not the right size, your printer needs to be adjusted - otherwise your block will not turn out the right size. Quilter's Cache also has a scale (using symbols) as to how difficult the block is so if you are considering requesting one from that site, make sure it is not at the most difficult level. By the way, I am not making a list yet, so even if you sent e-mail or posted here, please do that after I list all the rules and begin sign-ups - likely to be mid-Sept. Jeanne

This is SO much fun! I was away this past weekend and returned to a lovely stack of six bookmark envelopes to open. What riches! Everyone's bookmarks are just terrific. I can't wait for the mail today.

Thank you Siobhan and all the lovely people who've sent such kind and often original bookmarks - all so welcome - thank you again.

I have sent out my cards but my bookmarks leave much to be desired - I saw myself as creating something special but in the end the swine flu vaccine!!!! got me and I was laid up for a couple of weeks so my plans went to pot.
BUT much better now and much cjeered up by the super communications

Thank you to everyone! It seems like nearly every time I go home, there is something fun for me to open from one of you, and the ingenuity and individual tastes that the bookmarks reflect is great. Everything from home-made to bought - it's all good to me....

Today I received Christmas cards from friends but there were no bookmarks in the envelopes! I'm so spoiled now!!

I wish I could sit in a room with all of you and ask questions about the booksmarks. They are all so interesting and different (and useful, of course) and I would love to hear more about them.

I sent mine out yesterday. The ones to Britain should arrive by the middle of next week and the rest should start trickling in by the beginning of the week after that.

I have received several so far, all of them lovely additions to my collection.

HOW I CHOSE MY BOOKMARK DESIGN:

Well, being a dyed-in-the-wool "creator" and a dedicated recycler this was quite easy.
One day I noticed that the design on my favorite fat-free milk ( that gives you another hint to my choices!) was rather interesting. I liked the arch over the charming bovine ( what kind is it?), and thought that the dairy scene might be appealing since it also depicted a typical American barn.
I thought the wool felt gave them a "warm, fuzzy" feeling!

That's my story, what's yours!?

PS..to the RP'er in Lancaster PA....what a coincidence that your daughter married someone from my town! Small world isn't it!

Also....if you are at all drawn to do something with a milk carton that has the screw top pour spout.....go to this site. It is a hoot to create one of these milk money pouches!!

Be brave....it's easier to make than it seems.

Let me know if you do it! You can use an orange juice carton with same kind of pour top also.

I held out opening the envelopes until today and all I can say is wow, wow, wow!! From homemade to local landmarks, vacation destinations, local libraries - one even local to me! - mementos and quotations...I am touched and amazed. Thank you all so much; I am SO glad I joined. You have enriched this Christmas for me more than I can ever convey!

I sent most of my cards on Monday and the remainder trickled into the post throughout the week, with the last cards going in the mail yesterday so I hope they reach you all soon! Embarrassingly, I realized too late that I accidentally sent an international envelope with extra U.S. postage, thinking I was sending it with the required extra International postage; hopefully it worked out to the required amount anyway or hopefully the postal service has a heart - it is Christmas after all!

How I chose MY bookmark design...

The last time we did this, I used a basic design I had learned from the children's librarian I was assistant to in my previous home. I wanted to do something homemade again, but different. I don't think I'm a very creative person so it took a while to come up with the idea. I had received a folded, magnetic bookmark (I think from the last bookmark exchange) and thought that would be something different. I experimented with different types of scrapbook paper but my biggest challenge was getting the magnet parts. I found the magnets at a local scrapbook store but couldn't find the steel piece for the magnet's counterpart. That's where my DH came in. He found something that would work, cut it into pieces and spray painted them and voila! I had the other part I needed for the bookmarks. And you all should have yours by now (I hope).
