OT: I got a job!

I got a job - in my chosen field and at only a slightly lower salary than my old job. Thanks for the encouragement, vibes and good wishes, everyone!

Vera, lovely pictures! I know it can be frustrating to chase them around. My DH is the photographer here and we have found the best thing to do is sit and wait near a plant that you know they love to visit. Time hasn't allowed much of that this year but my butterfly attractors are blooming now so we just might make time. Good for you on getting such nice pictures. Bonny

I'm so happy for you both, Kat! It does seem our world dings the shyer and quieter among us, doesn't it? I have two shy kids and the other one has a much easier time with job interviews, etc. Getting the first job under his belt gave Ryan a good stepping stone, along with the experience of dealing with people. If I have to interview for another job one day, I'm going to have a verrrrrry hard time. I'll bet the Seattle job was a foregone conclusion and that they already had someone else nearly hired (inside the company,) before Ryan even went into the room. Sounds like they were just going through the motions and that was maybe why they couldn't look him in the eye. We had to pay dd's Cobra for a year (before the age limit was raised,) and that was also a lot of money--I feel your pain on that one.

I worked 2 days already, its great! yesterday was a snap but today I am wore out! Having to lean over the steam table and serve over 400 kids in my line can be back breaking. We had 2 accidents today. A light exploded on the steam table and the boss slipped & fell on the rubber mat. I think they are both fine now. I worked a little later today which is good too. Food now is a bit different and suppose to me healthier. The pizza has a whole wheat crust (not great & rather stiff) other changes come from your presidents wife M.O.

Thank you. I expect to start working right after the new year. The salary proved to be better than I expected - they have clearly started taking university education into account, which they didn't some years ago when I was still studying translation theory.

Woodnymph, the way people are shopping for Christmas presents you'd think the economy was fine, but turn on the news and it sounds like everything is going straight to Hades.

Yoyobon, I liked that "Hell in the hallway" which is, I think, the Norse hell: dark, freezing cold and very frightening. Been there a couple of times :-(

Thank you. I am pretty excited about it, even though it is a temporary posting (3 years max). It's mostly legal and other specialised translations. It will be a good solid work experience to have on my resume.

I plan to go back to school next winter and re-take some courses in German and maybe learn Spanish. I would very much like to have more languages to translate from because it means I could get work for the EU or UN.
