IPad vs Kindle

I'm considering getting an IPad. I would use it for travel, both to connect to the internet (yes, I am an internet-oholic), and also as a book reader. You should see my suitcase when I set off on a trip, filled halfway with books that I need to satisfy that habit! It gets very heavy. I love real books when I am at home, and even prefer hardbacks, but real books are not easily portable in the quantities required to satisfy a voracious reader. A single device that would enable me both to read books and to stay in contact electronically sounds to me like a very sensible idea.

However, I do note that the Kindle is less expensive than the IPad. I have an older laptop that I can use for the internet, but it seems cumbersome, not to say excessive, to travel with two such devices. And I know that many people love their Kindles. From what I read, the IPad has a Kindle app. Is it as good? Has anyone used both? Evaluated the merits of each?

I'd like to hear your experiences and opinions before I make a decision.
