A Ghost Story for Hallowe'en

To celebrate Hallowe'en, I offer the following "real" ghost story. The story was told to me this summer by a co-worker.

When my co-worker was a young girl, she lived with her mother in an older home in Toronto, near the shores of Lake Ontario. The girl's parents had separated acrimoniously and were in the process of divorcing.

One day she got into a huge argument with her mother. In preteen exasperation, she left her house and went for a long walk. When she got back home, her mother was nowhere in sight. Not sure of her reception, she went quietly to her room. Soon she became aware of the sound of a woman crying in an upstairs bathroom. She assumed her mother was crying over the argument. The young girl waited uncomfortably in her room for what seemed like a long time. Eventually the crying sounds stopped. Not long after she heard her mother walk in the front door and go into the kitchen. She put the crying sounds out her mind, and went downstairs to make peace with her mother.

The incident was mostly forgotten until several months later when a friend of her mother's came to visit for a few days. The girl and mother went out for the afternoon, returning about dinner at which time they found her sitting alone in the living room. The friend was acting a bit odd, and seemed uncomfortable, even a bit jittery. Over dinner, the friend continued to act as if she was distracted by something unpleasant, and occasionally glanced towards the staircase which led upstairs.

After dinner was over, the friend broke her silence and revealed the something very spooky had happened that afternoon, while she was alone in the house. At some point in the afternoon, she became aware of a faint sound coming from the upstairs bathroom. Whatever the noise was, it sounded eerily like a woman crying. When she investigated, it stopped as she approached the bathroom door. If the friend thought the weird experience was over, she was to experience much worse that afternoon. The sound continued on and off for the several hours. Sometimes it was very faint, barely audible in fact, and other times it was quite distinctly the sounds of an unknown woman crying. Though it seemed to rise and fall, its source always seeming to be the upstairs bathroom. She looked all over the house, but was never able to find the source of the crying sounds. Eventually she gave up trying to find the source. At one point she even contemplated called the police, but oddly, found herself feeling increasingly helpless. Weirdly, she found herself just sitting in fearful silence, listening for the phantom sobs. The sounds finally stopped just a few minutes before her friend and friend's daughter got home.

The girl's mother did not believe the story, and wondered if her friend was suffering from sort of a breakdown. She was a bit relieved when said friend announced the following morning that she would be cutting her visit short, and would be leaving that day. The girl did not tell her mother...
