I pick up at least one free book a day from Amazon. I get the 3 email lists with all the great deals and freebies daily. Pixelofink.com, bookbub.com, and bookgorilla.com. So many wonderful free books offered daily. I have the kindle app on all of my devices which allows me to read any kindle books, but I can also read other formats like epub with my other reader apps like aldiko, there are free lists for those also out there. Today there are another 2 of the J.A. Konrath series for free and one for 99c. I now have just about that entire series by picking them up every time one was on for free. The main character is a woman detective, her name is Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels which is why the names of the books are all drink names. Welcome suz 1. You are certanly in the right place. There are many RP-ers here who state mystery as their favorite genre (including me). I did read The Thirteenth Tale. And while it started out well, I personally thought it lost steam 2/3 of the way through. But that's the great thing about RP - we can all discuss books and disagree on books and we all respect each other's opinions. My very favorite Agatha Christie is The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. I think it is her best, but then again, I've only read about half of them and then they get all muddled up in my head anyway. I've never read Laurie R. King, but am a big fan of books set in the Victorian Era so I'll have to take a peek at them at the library. Some of my favorite mystery writers are: Kate Sedley Ellis Peters Margaret Yorke MC Beaton Hazel Holt John Sandford Elizabeth George But I like many other authors and genres as well. Currently, I am reading Jasper Fforde's second in the Thursday Next series, "Lost in a Good Book". Not far enough along to form any opinions yet. Again, welcome to RP. PAM

Marion Mainwaring completed The Buccaneers, and there was a miniseries with Carla Gugino and Mira Sorvino, which has a completely different ending, and adds things I don't think were intended in the book (eg one of the characters is a homosexual caught in a compromising situation). I was incurably romantic in my early 20s and read it numerous times, but I suspect it would be too sappy for me now. Read P&P, watched the miniseries, watched the movie, now what's left for me but to read 2 essays on Jane Austen I just found at the library. I read Down and Out in Paris and London a few weeks ago, and while I found the part in Paris sparkling and interesting, the part in London was incredibly repetitive, IMO, and I couldn't see the point of it. Couldn't he go to his family's house while waiting for the job to start?

I'm in the middle of Mary Gentle's 1610: A Sundial in a Grave. It's been marketed as an historical fantasy/adventure pastiche that involves plots to kill both Henry of Navarre of France and James I of England -- and is all that -- but I think more important is its exploration of gender and sexuality. Some might find the romantic relationship a bit too deviant, but I'm finding it quite profound the further it progresses. It's the kind of book that should have been nominated for a Tiptree award, but I don't find it on any Tiptree shortlist. And have I mentioned that Mary Gentle really knows how to write a good sword fight?
