"I better burn the CC bill before DH sees it. " Does the DH still buy flowers for you? Even when I was single and bought my plants, if it produced flowers and somehow I croaked it, I figured I got more enjoyment out of it and spent less money than for a bouquet that lasts a week. If you'd like some entertainment, there's a great thread about how to 'count' roses... 1. Mini roses don't count. 2. Floribundas 'because they are not full-fledged hybrid teas' count as half. 3. Shrubs, Climbers, Ramblers, Old Garden Roses, etc. don't count because they can be considered "landscaping." 4. Roses not planted 'or in pots' don't count. (See the "Territory" Clause). 5. Roses that were discounted count as half. 6. Roses received as gifts don't count. 7. Odd numbers must always be rounded off, if you're out of room, round the number down. For every one-hundred, divide by two. This is known as a "stock split." 8. Roses whose names you don't know or can't remember obviously don't count. 9. Roses that are on Shovel Prune Watch don't count; the roses that replace them also don't count as they cancel each other out. Duplicate/multiples count as one as they are considered a set. Roses that are not planted in a bed don't count. (See the "Landscaping" Addendum). Bareroots don't count because they are dormant when they arrive; once you plant them and they start to bud out, well, you've already done your count, so you will just have to wait until next season, by which time you'll be sure you already counted them. Mislabeled roses don't count because you probably already have one of them somewhere, which has already been counted once, probably. Anything less than Grade 1 counts only a fraction, and since fractions are not whole numbers they can be rounded off (remember the rounding off rule). Roses that you think you might give away can be excluded from the count, makes it easier to part with them; if, by some chance you wind up keeping them, oh well. HTs that get huge and wind up taking more than one space should be counted twice, but remember the duplicate rule. Now if, after counting, you have under a hundred roses, you must immediately place some orders and they don't count because they're in transit and therefore not in the ground. Roses ordered on a whim really don't count because they were never on a list. (This is known as the List Rule: If it's not on a list, it doesn't exist, most likely). If you cut many roses and give them away, this is considered Charity, and everyone knows that you get special allowances for Charity, which brings us to... Tax Deductions. (see Claiming Roses as Dependents). See? You really didn't have as many as you thought you did! Time to go order some more!

This is a calamondin that I havent had that long, I bought this last year for about ÃÂ£20 on ebay I saw the price and obviously had to buy it to go with my other citrus trees. It had been left outside for the winter as the owner couldnt move it there was a lot of damage to thin branches and they had chopped a lot of bits off to try nd remove it, this has now mainly recovered and it seems to be quite healthy and improved a lot since I bought it in July 2013 The seller had owned it for over 25 years and said the owner before him was a nursery that was closing. They had used this at the nursery as a display item and for taking bud wood from for about 15 to 20 years or more before that and it was just as big when they bought it from another nursery , he thought it was from reads nursery initially I have this now in Bulgaria , it spent the last year in a house in the UK with 600w metal halide lights on it. It seems much happier now its outside in the daylight.

My first goal is to get my plants moved from the old house to the new one. We moved from PA to Denver in 2007 and have been renting since then. I don't think I have been on GardenWeb since we moved. I did bring a bunch of things with me that first spring. This spring we are buying a house not too far from where we have been renting. I need to dig a holding bed as soon as we close and start moving my stuff. I have a few things I would like to find a permanent home for before digging (like lavender) but most things just need to stay alive. Also the house needs paint so I won't be doing any foundation beds until after that happens. I hope to spend spring and summer digging and mulching and preparing for next spring. Oh, and there are fruit trees. :) We'll have apple, pear and plum. I think one of the apples is going to be a bit of a sacrificial victim of my learning to prune. Really I don't think I could make it worse short of killing it. The last two years I've been only barely motivated to do any gardening. Getting ready to buy this place and have my very own yard to do with as I please has really brought my energy and interest levels back up. :)

2013 Cool Season Vegetable Grow List

Charles, Yes, I plant them all in mid-winter through spring. When I lived in Fort Worth, some of these were fall plants only for me because Fort Worth warmed up and got too hot too early. Up here, usually the cold nights linger a bit later most years than they did down there and I can get good crops from most cool-season crops on this list most springs. The last two years we have warmed up too early in spring for some of them though. It is really hard for me to get good spring harvests from cauliflower or brussels sprouts in spring, so I plant them only for a fall harvest. I also have trouble with salsify and a few other odd things that need a long cool season. They do better in fall than spring, but I don't grow them much any more in either spring or fall. Up here in southcentral OK (I am just across the river from Gainesville, TX), the key is to plant a lot of them extra early (earlier than OSU recommends) and cover them up with floating row cover that offers some freeze and frost protection. I have floating row cover in several weights, and the heaviest one gives 8 degrees of frost protection. I have found if I cover up the plants with a double layer of row cover, it often will give the plants 12 or more degrees of frost protection. Using floating row cover changed my gardening life because it allows me to plant early and not lose the plants to cold weather. I also often lay down black plastic on top of the cool-season crop beds to warm up the soil while the air temps are still pretty cool. The warm soil can help cool-season seeds germinate more quickly than if I was trying to germinate them in cold soil. To have a good few months with cool-season plants, I really have to push the limits here in terms of planting early, but I figure I have nothing to lose by trying. The nice thing is that if we heat up too early and the cool-season crops fail to produce well (or at all), I know I'll have another chance with the fall garden. That happened last year with snap peas and broccoli. I had a wonderful fall harvest of broccoli, but still didn't get any snap peas. As it turned out, the grasshoppers, which exist in huge numbers in our rural area most years, loved the sugar snap peas so much they ate the plants down to the ground. For a while the peas tried valiantly to regrow, but after being eaten repeatedly, they gave up. I even had them under floating row cover, but the hoppers ate their way through it too. That's never happened before. Maybe I'll have sugar snap peas this spring if the weather cooperates. It also helps that I have a lot of space. When the garden was smaller, I pretty much had to choose between cool-season and warm-season crops in spring because there wasn't room for everything. We enlarged the garden every year until it reached its present size, so now I can grow pretty much whatever I want whenever I want. That helps. My favorite gardening magazine is "Texas Gardener", by the way, and if you've never seen it, you might want to check it out. I find it just as useful for me here in OK as I did when I lived in TX. You wouldn't believe how many great varieties for our part of the country I've found merely by reading about them in Texas Gardener. Two of the five gardening books I'm reading this winter are from Texas too---Dr. Bill Adams' book on Growing Tomatoes and Greg Grant's Vegetable and Fruit book. Dawn

I read to many to list. I do keep track of them and counted them up the other day and I had read 72 from Jan. to Dec.

I read a lot and the most memorable was A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki.
It is one of the best books I have read for a long, long time.
I got it at our local library but plan on buying the hardcover book for my collection.
I guess I should keep a list of books I have read....thanks for the reminder.

I don't keep track of what I read. I am reading the 4th in the Clan of the Cave Bear series by Jean Auel and enjoying it. It's The Shelters of Stone. I found it at our Friends of the Library resale shop for fifty cents!

I don't keep track of the books I read except for posting on Book of the Week, but I plan to start doing that now. I read at least twice the number of books that I feature each week and I only describe those that I really like. I try not to waste time reading a book that I don't like, except sometimes when a book has gotten a lot of buzz and I think that there has got to be something compelling occurring soon. One such book that I found unrewarding was The sense of an ending by Julian Barnes.

Carol_in_california - author Ruth Ozeki was doing a reading this evening at the bookstore where we had dinner. After reading your post, I regret that I didn't go to hear her!

I also read a Maeve Binchy book but can't remember the name of it. It was one I hadn't read before and found it at a second hand bookstore when the kids and I went back to visit my dad. They bought tons of old books. They love books...so do I. I also bought book 5 or whatever it is of the Outlander Series...and book one. Only read the first one and need to find the books in between now.

I can't remember any others. I think I'll make a list this year of the books I've read, just to see how many I do read in a year. I used to read a lot more before I became a nurse. I think I got burned out on reading textbooks during school. lol.

Kathsgrdn reminded me that DH and I listened to Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy on different road trips and liked them. I bought the book Killing Jesus, but could not get into it.

I read the reviews on Readers Paradise forum about Ruth Ozeki's book. Interesting.
I read all of Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear series recently.
I got the entire set at our local library for a total of 30 cents.

My list is at home. I didn't care much for "The Sense of an Ending" either, Stacey. Hope Alisande liked "Learning to Swim" as much as I did!

Right now I have been engaged by -- and laughing out loud at -- "When Will There Be Good News?" by Kate Atkinson. DH brought it back from the Kihei library for me. (He is the *best* 'picker'.)

Chisue, I have to say "Learning to Swim" was my favorite of the year. I look forward to reading the sequel, "A Cold and Lonely Place."

The friend who recommended it recently recommended a series of mystery novels by A.D. Scott set in 1950s Scotland. I ordered the first one: A Small Death in the Great Glen

I also loved Learning to Swim. It is set in a nearby location and that added to my pleasure. If you like the A.D. Scott book, try Ann Cleeves' Shetland Quartet. They take place on the Shetland Islands which I think is the northern most part of Scotland. Loved the setting and the books. She is good. Some other favorites are
