I also loved Remains of the Day, but hated NLMG. I read it all because we were discussing it for a book group, but I cringed through most of it. I can handle creepy, like in Ghost Writer or The Portrait. This wasn't just creepy it was poorly written, with little thought about where he wanted the plot to go. The whole idea was creepy and could have made for an excellent sci fi novel looking at the implications of cloning in general. But he's not the author for it.
BTW anyone think that if they could clone humans for farming organs, why didn't they clone organs instead?
Cindy - a bit of a spoiler there, wouldn't you say??!!?
It's well known that I don't agree with you in the slightest about Never Let Me Go. But it's fully discussed in another thread.
Of his other books, When we were Orphans was Booker short-listed, but I found it to be his weakest book. I think both A Pale View of Hills and An Artist of the Floating World are both exceptionally good books. The Outsider is a most peculiar book, which I like, but I would not be surprised if people didn't.
Um, what is the statute of limitations on spoilers? Its been out for a while....tho you are right, I probably should have whited it out. Then again - its not like thats a big spoiler since you get the idea pretty quickly whats going to happen.
And I know you don't agree with me. And such is the way of the world :)
