As we approach the last days of the decade (the Aughts? the "double 0's"? the 2000's?) what do you think were some of the best books of the decade?

I can't remember back a whole decade but the book I've enjoyed most recently is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The characters are so charming although the background of the story is tragic.

I have never had a perm or colored my hair. As a child I had pigtails and I wore them on my daughter. I still think that's a cute look. In HS I had a very long and high pony tail and then got a pixie. I had the Mia Farrow really short cut and for a brief time ,the shag. But I went with a blunt cut after that and for decades I have kept that style. It used to be real long and gradually got shorter but it's still longer in front than the back..the classic bob. But with humidity I have corkscrew curls which I hate so I have to blow dry. I have not been to a beauty shop in 30 years.

Without a doubt, Ann's brownies are our favorite. DECADENT BROWNIES (Ann T) 1 cup butter 20 ounces chocolate 1-1/2 cups sugar pinch of salt 4 eggs 1 cup flour vanilla to taste 1 cup toasted pecans OPTIONS: Use 3/4 cup brown and 3/4 cup white sugar Add a shot of real espresso These are my all time favourite brownies. If you like a fudge style brownie then you will love these. I've played around with this recipe for a number of years. I call it Decadent because of the 20 ounces of chocolate in the batter. Rather than melt butter with the chocolate and then add the sugar. I melted the butter and the sugar together and then added all the chocolate. I also used a combination of brown and white sugar and I think the flavour is even richer. I edited the recipe to show the change. And I topped some of them with a glaze. But decided that they are decadent enough without the glaze. The glaze is just overkill and unnecessary. They freeze well. I usually cut them into bars, wrap in plastic wrap and put them into a freezer bag. Easy to pull out a bar when a chocolate craving hits. Line a 13 X 9 inch rectangle pan with foil and butter. Melt butter and sugar together over medium heat until the butter has melted and the mixture is smooth. Add the chocolate and stir until chocolate melts. Continuing stirring until the mixture is smooth. Remove from the heat. Add one egg at a time and mix well using a wooden spoon. Add vanilla (and espresso if using). Stir in flour and salt and mix well. Stir in the pecans or walnuts and pour into prepared pan. Bake in a 350 Â°F for approximately 30 minutes. Do not over bake. Brownies should be set in the middle but still slightly soft. Place immediately in the freezer. When cold, remove and cut into bars. Wrap each bar in plastic wrap and store in the freezer.

I'm currently reading Passion for Books: A Book LoverÂs Treasury of Stories, Essays, Humor, Lore, and Lists on Collecting, Reading, Borrowing, Lending, Caring for, and Appreciating Books. I don't know if it's famous or not, but I laughed out loud when I read Umberto Eco's "How To Justify a Private Library". [For]people who possess a fairly sizable library (large enough in my case that someone entering our house canÂt help but notice it; actually, it takes up the whole place), a visitor enters and says "What a lot of books! Have you read them all?" At first I thought that the question characterized only people who had scant familiarity with books... But there is more to it than that. I believe that, confronted by a vast array of books, anyone will be seized by the anguish of learning and will inevitably lapse into asking the question that expresses his torment and his remorse... In the past I adopted a tone of contemptuous sarcasm. 'I haven't read any of them; otherwise, why would I keep them here?' but this is a dangerous answer because it invites the obvious follow-up: 'And where do you put them after you've read them?' The best answer is the one always used by Roberto Leydi: 'And more, dear sir, many more,' which freezes the adversary and plunges him into a state of awed admiration. But I find it merciless and angst generating. Now I have fallen back on the riposte: 'No, these are the ones I have to read by the end of the month. I keep the others in my office,' a reply that on the one hand suggests a sublime ergonomic strategy and on the other leads the visitor to hasten the moment of his departure.

If I made a list, my computer would crash so I'll pick just one, read at the beginning of the decade:

The Unredeemed Captive by John Demos. It's a true story written by one of the leading scholars of early New England history, thoroughly researched and as dramatic and heart-stopping as any novel could ever hope to be.

A young girl is kidnapped by French and Indians from her frontier home in Massachusetts in a raid during the bitter winter of 1704. Her father is the minister and therefore the leader of the town. Despite his worldly power, and his love for his daughter, she refuses to return. She has bonded with her new culture and religion in Canada. But she loves her father and her family too. What will happen?

The description of the three cultures--Puritan, French Catholic, Native American--and how they clash and compromise is told thru the drama of real lives and real people. What a movie this would make. As it is, I didn't move for two days, til I finished it.

I hope you enjoy The Unredeemed Captive as much as I did, Lydia. It was so good that I visited Deerfield MA where the family lived. It was a bitter cold winter's day and as dusk settled I could just imagine how they all felt--all the personalities involved in the true-life drama.

I'm glad to see Garlic and Sapphires listed as that's one I almost added. These lists have been quite interesting and I'm saving the thread for reference. I've read about half the books listed, almost all the popular ones, but didn't like them! Hated the popular Potato Peel book :(

My big discovery of the decade was China Mieville; Perdido Street Station and The Scar are two of the best fantasies ever.

Also Hall Duncan's duo "The Book of all Hours" (Vellum and Ink), possibly the best mix of mythology and fantasy since Julian May.

And thanks to this group, Sharon Kay Penman's Welsh trilogy.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman is probably the most extraordinary book I've read in the past few years, as well as Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.

I would also like to give a nod to the Harry Potter books which I enjoyed more than I would have ever imagined, and read all of them more than once.
