There is a new television series based on the Outlander books. You have to have access to the Starz network to see it. However, the first episode is available online at this point. Here is the link:

I'm planning to watch it. My husband said he saw an ad for it on one of the cable channels, not Starz. Here's hoping he can remember (or find) which one it was.

Thanks for the heads up but I've read this one. I love her books and can't wait for "In My Heart's Own Blood" to be released. I don't usually re-read a book but I could easily do that with this series. Diana Gabaldon is the the best author.

Thank you all for sharing! So many of you have mentioned excellent books that I had not mentioned. The Historian, for example. Others, like Kristin Lavransdatter, I still want to read, have gone through the trouble to buy, and look at them every now and again as they wait patiently on my shelf. Frieda, I have read Collapse and found it hard to put down. That book formed the basis for many side books into the societies mentioned therein. I have Guns, Germs, and Steel; see note in above paragraph re: books waiting patiently. As for 1491, I KNOW I read it. I remember bits of it, but cannot find it listed in my book journal. I have searched back to 2001 and found nothing. This is odd as I find a perverse sort of satisfaction logging a book into my journal. I also read Tony Horwitz's A Voyage Long and Strange (only 445 pages)which covers a bit of the same ground, but I do not believe I am confusing the two books. annpan, your post made my laugh. You've been robbed! Love it! I recently read the new Elizabeth George book. Most of her Lynley titles are doorstops. But I cannot truly put any of them on a "fan club" list. They were okay, some better than others, but nothing I truly remember, nothing that was thought-provoking. And this last one felt choppy, disconnected, and just plain "off". PAM

Romy, yes, we had the same initial reservations about Tom Cruise playing him, but agree that he actually did a good job. FUN: regarding Dorothy Gilman, I fell in love with her young adult books when I was a kid. They were written under her then-married name of Dorothy Gilman Butters. I eventually went on to read her Mrs. Pollifax series and many of her other books. I was totally shocked to find out that she was living in Albuquerque at the same time as we were in the 80's, as one of her sons lived there. I actually got a chance to meet her at a book reading and signing she did. I took along my very favorite of her young adult books, "A Calico Year" for her to sign. She was so surprised to see it and we had a wonderful chat. Lovely lady. She passed in 2008, I believe.

This post is depressing! Now I have to add more books to my already-large collection of books waiting to be read! I love the Outlander series on Starz!! I usually buy my books from abebooks.com - I notice they have "Outlander" published in 2001...and they also have "Outlander (Starz Tie-in Edition)" published in 2014. Is anyone familiar with the tie-in edition? I wonder if it would be better than the original? Really confused here.

We got pay TV especially to watch this :)
I have been following the filming and it looks like it will be very good. The producer, Ron Moore, says his wife (who is the costume designer for the series) is a huge fan and his main concern is to get it right so he isn't in trouble.
Diana Gabaldon has also had more input than usual for an author.

I read the first of the series and really enjoyed it but couldn't get into comitting to the rest of it.

Yet the HP series was addictive start to finish.

The Maisie Dobbs series was another addictive pleasure.

I would have to say that it's not the idea of a series that put me off....maybe I just got weary of all the burning loins and heaving breasts !!

I got annoyed with it after a while. The way she started the book with the husband telling his wife about the scotsman looking at her through a window made me think the author was going to cycle back to it, but by the time the third book came along and it was obvious she was going to make this a very long series, I got bored and never went back.

And, yoyobon, I'm with you; I got tired of the burning loins etc. LOL

" Okay Diana, we get the picture, you have your average reader in a proper sweat ( for which her husband will thank you dearly) now let's just move it along ! "
