the book that becomes a movie

Between "The Help," "One Day" and "Sarah's Key," (and probably more), there are a lot of books coming out as movies this fall.

And those 3 are all on my to-be-read list.

Are you someone who will always read the book first, then go back and rent the movie? Or will you strike the book off your TBR list, to make room for another, and just go see the movie?

I'm not sure what's more annoying: Having read the book and then being acutely aware of the changes that the movie director made, or having seen the movie first, and then when you read the book, the mental images are already "directed" for you because you can't put aside the visuals from the movie?

For me, I think the books are staying on the TBR list.

I am with you, I always read the book first, and very rarely follow up with the movie.
The exception for me should arrive by mail very soon, the movie "Rachel Rachel" I purchased online after reading the "Jest of God" by Margaret Laurence.

I think that it is impossible to capture all on the screen that is contained in any novel.

One of my favourite books is "Love In The Time Of Cholera" I believe that the movie was a big bomb!!! A shame for I am sure that most movie goers would not bother reading the book.

I also read the book first, though there are some books that I know I won't get to and might just see the movie instead. Sarah's Key would probably fall into that category for me -- lots of good buzz about the book, but probably not something I'd rush out to read myself. Plus I really like the lead actress, Kristen Scott Thomas.

I'm waiting for HBO's Game of Thrones to come out on DVD, and I hope to finish at least the first two books in the series before I watch. I wouldn't see that without having read the books first.

Dickens published NICHOLAS NICKELBY serially, and it was wildly popular -- so popular that a couple people wrote the endings and published them as the 'real' ending. So Dickens had to rewrite and change the ending to be different from the fake ones. It is very common that editors come through and insist on a different ending, fearing that a sad or controversial ending will turn the readers off. Robert Heinlein had to rewrite the ending of PODKAYNE OF MARS to editorial order -- originally the narrator heroine died. It's rarely that movie is as good as a book but sometimes good adaptations happen-and I tend to remember them all since happens not often For example "Girl With a Dragon Tatoo" i liked more as a movie..the non-American version. But I started with a movie, that probably influences things. "The Joy Luck Club" managed to be a great adaptation of the book-and I actually read the book several yeas before watching the movie Mini series of "Pride and Predjudice" are nice adaptation while the movie with Keira Knightly was something I kinda dismissed because to me that wasn't a good adaptation at all. Still, I prefer the book of course. The former Soviet Union movies based on "Sherlock Holmes" are considered the best in all the adaptations of Sherlck Holmes ever made, and won the prize as such-and I totally agree. Of course they filmed just several stories but did it very well. "Alias Grace" did a very fine job; but let me tell you the book is finer...reading it now. Now some books are probably too much of a challenge to ever be interpreted on the screen..I haven't seen one good "Wuthering Heights"..and I really tried. I haven't seen a "Lolita" that comes even close to the book itself. I don't think one can adapt Nabokov successfully. Too many things will go missing. His language is too good and too elusive for that. No Dostoevsky or Tolstoy either,,of course I didn't watch all of these..but whatever I started I just turned off. Very fast. As I was totally obsessed with "Les Miserables" since age 8 (to the point I tried to steal a little bun from a bakery-and succedeed-but that was my first and last attempt of stealing lol..more than I can handle..it was a tiny 3 kopeiks bun but nevertheless)-I tried to watch as many adaptations as possible. Some I enjoyed; but no they don't measure to the book. I couldn't appreciate long passages about monasteries, sewer, Parisian jargon, the battle of Waterloo etc when I was a little girl..but now I find these much more interesting. As it was when I read Fowles "The Magus"..at twenty I was so much into story..and the stories within the story I went through too quick..wars and all.. But now I understand these are actually the best ones there..or maybe they are to me now, since I became older. Generally I think the more complex and well written the book is the harder it will be to translate it I do look forward to adaptations that don't exist yet, or exist but I haven't seen them yet like Löwensköld trilogy by Selma Lagerlöf'..I think there can be a huge potential of making a great movie out of it.. Steven King is an example of an author whose books can be translated very well into visuals. PS remembered one more adatation that was good .."The Name of the Rose". They cut a lot out of it obviously..still, a good movie

Cyn, not sure why you're disappointed, although it might not be cleaning up at awards season, being recognized with nominations is no slouch and Green Book was nominated for Oscars in Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Film Editing and Best Screenplay. Nominated for Golden Globes in Best Actor and Best Director, Screen Actors Guild nomination For Best Supporting Actor, and quite a few more nominations by other organizations! I loved it, my daughter felt it was derivative and shallow. Agree that the plot was rather hoary however I thought the acting was superb. If Mahershala Ali doesn't win an acting award at the Oscars *I'll* be disappointed.

How about Notting Hill? OK so it is a rom-com but Hugh Grant, he of the floppy hair and boyish charm, does run a travel book shop, even if the 'plot' doesn't hang about the stacks too much. Please say some of you saw it way back in '99. Notting Hill Trailer

I usually read the book first and if I loved it, go to the movie with some trepidation. A perfect movie for me was The Road. It was exactly as I pictured.
One that really angered me was the movie called Slumdog Millionaire. I had listened to the audiobook and then gone to the movie. Things were added just for shock value (a boy falling into the waste in an outhouse) that were never in the movie, and in addition, major changes were made to the story line. You might love the movie if you didn't read the book, but you could never love the movie if you first read the book.
Again, with some trepidation, I await The Hunger Games and The Help movies, both books I really loved.

I saw an early run of The Help and thought it followed the book quite closely. Of course, there were some things left out, but I really liked the movie. The theater was full, and everyone seemed to be enjoying it. For some reason, my church got two tickets for the showing, and the church secretary asked me to go with her. We had discussed the book earlier.

If I read and loved the book, I do not see the movie-with the exception of the Harry Potters.
I was underwhelmed by The Help but think it will make a better movie than book. I liked the story, just thought it was very poorly written, and the cast of the movie is outstanding.

Seeing a movie or TV adaptation of a book has sometimes encouraged me to read the book to get better insights. Not everything can be brought out in a movie either. A TV adaptation with a string of episodes is so much better at telling an involved story, too, e.g.Charles Dickens long and well populated books.
Some books have been halved for the movie adaptation,such as "A Town Like Alice" and "Captain from Castile".These books have surprised me by having a later story. The movie of "A Circle of Friends" by Maeve Binchy left out some of my favourite book characters.
I did read "The Godfather" before I saw the movie as I was given the book and I was glad I had because it explained significant things that I would not have noticed otherwise.
