OT: Two Big Dogs AGAIN!

Hello

Three and a half years ago, I posted a message entitled "Two Big Dogs Minus One" and shared the sad news of the death of my beloved Landseer Newf mix, Snoopy. He is still the most amazing dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

But I must now share the WONDERFUL news that I am, indeed, TWO big dogs again! Two weeks ago, we brought home Winston, our new lab/weimaraner mix. He is a delight and is growing quickly. My other boy, a lab named Capt. Nemo, is still not quite convinced that the little guy is worth the trouble.

Thank you all for being there in my time of doggie sorrow... and thank you for sharing my time of doggie happiness.

That is so good to read. I had a plump old female Kelpie cross who had grown up with my children and was a good companion for the family. We then got a Deerhound pair from a rescue centre and that made the Kelpie a bit jealous. She started going for the long walks we took with the lively three years olds and got slimmer and friskier as a result!

I'm so happy for you. I've had a total of 5 much-cherished dogs in my life. There is nothing to compare to the unconditional love and affection our canine companions share with us.

It's been a busy, busy day! Just let the 'babies' in for the night! Spent a little more fun time with 'Arrant!' Told him he has only to get through tonight & tomorrow & then it will be time to see the Dr. I don't think he's too happy - growled! lol! Gets his bath tomorrow, brushed, & his nails trimmed. He'll be ready! Me - I'm just trying to stay in the 'positive' mode! :)) Thanks for the prayers & comments everyone!! I appreciate them very, very much! Made my evening (or should I say 1:58 am) seem a little better! Thank you!! You guys/gals are TOPS! Nephew's doing better! He'll be seeing the family Dr. on Monday as well! A busy day Monday! I'm also taking a vacation day Monday - not sure what to expect?? I hope all goes well! Everyone - give your fur-babies, cats, kittens, birds, reptiles, whatever the case may be (even tropical fish!!) - a HUGE & very tight hug!! Hey Kathy - here is something that may take your ? away from autoimmune: is the failure of an organism to recognize its own constituent parts as self, which results in an immune response against its own cells and tissues. Any disease that results from such an aberrant immune response is termed an autoimmune disease. Prominent examples include Coeliac disease, diabetes mellitus type 1 (IDDM), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), SjÃ¶gren's syndrome, Churg-Strauss Syndrome, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). See List of autoimmune diseases. I know that that's a lot multi-syllabic words, but basically, it is the body attacking itself, due to the inborn lack of ability to recognize it's own DNA. It is sorta like you kill your son when he comes in your home, cause you don't recognize him. Very sad, very scary. Badgergirl, your granddog looks very similar to my baby, Bella, who lives with my STBX POC DH. I miss her terribly. She has black spots like a cow, though, but has the same smile as your sweetie. Pits (and Rots) are incredible dogs. (My Rot, Shelby, died a few years ago. I still miss her little dances.) They're so smart they'll do anything to please their owners. They're great natured, but because of their quick intelligence, easy to ruin. They learn what makes the owner happy, and if it's horrible, how are they to know? Their owner is happy and safe, and that's all that matters. I'm all for the death penalty for those who train these smart, loving dogs to be aggressive and dangerous. I'll get off my soapbox. They're fabulous. 'Nuff said. Fori, your baby looks like he got caught doing something! That's a funny place, a log! My Morgan sleeps on a cold tile floor. She can tear up a bed in less than 10 minutes. I started buying comforters at the thrift store, which she'll fight with, roll around with, and eventually sleep with a paw or sometimes her head on the blanket. They'll last about 6 months. My foster Pugs sleep on the comforters. They're just weird, sweet, funny little dogs who could do a bed, I'm sure, but they don't care as long as they're together. Thanks for the bed links, though. Morgan is 12-14 years old and I'd like to get her off the floor!

Thank you friends, Each and every one of your comments has brought a smile to my face. I feel for all of you who have lost pets in the past. Each and every day is special. I often hear people say to enjoy each day because we just never know if it is our last... now I take it to heart. There will never be another dog like Snoopy. He was one in a billion. But instead of focusing on the fact that he is not here with me anymore, I am trying to focus on the fact that I was so very lucky to have shared ten years of my life with this amazing dog... no, not just a dog, my best friend and companion. THANK YOU for the lovely comments. He is the most calm puppy I have ever seen. Hope I am not jinxing myself by saying this, but so far, training has been very easy. (A bit more sleep at night would be appreciated, however.)

I am now convinced that a sleepy puppy is a dream and a sleeping puppy is a myth! He is a sweetie but I am going on 18 nights without sleeping through the night. No wonder older folks rarely have babies.. at 46, it would kill me!

So far, no major chewing problems, house training is going very very well, he has learned his name and he sleeps on the bed and shares my pillow... but he only sleeps a few hours then he wanders around the bed, re-arranges the covers, flops down again for a short time before repeating the whole process. Then he gives me a cuddle and all is forgiven and forgotten.

Hang in there. I thought puppyhood would never end for our Australian Shepherd, but now he's about 2, it is better. There are still "days", but big picture: much better. You'll eventually catch up on sleep...

Or you could take Winston to puppy day care and take a nap? Might be worth the money if you're desperate. :-)

I feel your pain though....

Congratulations on restoring your household to Two Big Dogs once again. Those are the sweetest eyes and the silkiest fur I've ever seen. Enjoy him -- and best of luck on getting some sleep!

Winston's photo shows him to be an adorable puppy. Isn't it great to have 2? They keep each other company and their play helps to keep them healthier too. We stuck with one dog this time, and I always feel guilty when he wants to play and I don't! At 18 months, he's just emerging from Evil Puppyhood. We should be able to repair and paint the sunroom now. :)

THANK YOU all! Donamira, yes, the puppy is keeping the older boy active and frustrated, I mean happy, I mean frustrated. Each day brings them closer.

Winston is showing more personality each day. He does cute stuff and not-so-cute stuff but he has me wrapped around his front paw so thoroughly that he is forgiven.

Oh... and for you "dog people" out there, his feet are as big as dinner plates.

I am in love with that puppy face !!

We used to have weirmaraners when I was growing up and always had a black lab as an adult.
That should be an interesting mix.

I have no dogs now ( I cannot bear to say goodbye to them) but have such a soft spot in my heart for black labs.

Happiness is a warm puppy.
