I jjust cranked the font size to the largest available and a capital T is 3/8ths of an inch tall. That is really much larger than the large print I have seen in paper copies of the Reader's Digest. As the font gets larger, fewer lines of text can fit on the screen and the page turn frequency would also be increased. I believe the Kindle can be seen at Best Buy, but when I saw it there it was a dummy book and I don't know if the font size can be viewed. Barnes and Noble has Nooks for sale and they are working books. You could get an idea of font size there. I am very satisfied with my Kindle and take it with me everywhere I go in case I have to wait for any reason. I just read until I can move in traffic or get to the front of the line or get called in for an appointment. My Kindle 3 cost $139 and it is now available for $114 if you are willing to accept advertisements in place of screen savers and at the bottom of the Home page. I don't believe I would mind at all if I had the cheaper Kindle with the ads. Screen savers are just something to click past when I want to "wake" the Kindle and the Home page comes up only if you ask for it.

Just to add to mudlady's note...the DX model has more reading "acreage", but it is much more expensive than the Kindle 3 models. The advantage would be not so many page turns if cost is not an issue. I love my Kindle, too. :)

If it matters, your friend cannot check out library ebooks and download them to the Kindle, whereas most other ereaders, pc's, and macs do support this. Amazon has announced that some sort of change is in the works regarding Kindles and libraries but nothing has been nailed down yet.

Oops, I meant to add that if her library offers ebooks in EPub form, the text is "reflowable" meaning she can configure it, including enlarging it. I haven't used it but apparently it is very flexible.

Library books will be available for Kindle later this year.

Anyone else getting a Kindle ad at the bottom of this page?

I love my Kindle and am very happy that I will soon be able to get library books on it. Another thing that is very nice is that the size of a book is not an issue with an ereader. I have read several 800+ page books on my Kindle and my wrists and forearms were thanking me every moment. And it is very easy to read in bed.

I still love and read real books though.

Funny how that advertising thing works isn't it, Siobhan? Creeps me out a bit that we can be monitored so easily and closely.

I also love my Kindle. Recently gave my old one to my daughter and purchased a new one. It's great for reading in bed or outside on windy days. And I have cranked up the text size to a comfortable size and it works great.
