Latitude really doesn't have that much bearing on hardiness zones, at least with regards to the continental US and Canada......the actual geography is much more of a factor - bodies of water, topography, ocean currents, etc. I am much further north than either of you (latitude 47.62N) and yet I am in a much higher hardiness zone (8b). In fact, Seattle is located further north than any other major US city in the continental US. But I and much of the rest of the Pacific Northwest benefit from a maritime climate due to proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Puget Sound and shelter between two mountain ranges which produces a very moderating effect on weather - it's never very hot in summer or extremely cold in winter

Gardenrod, Often I'll have 2 or 3 flushes of fruit on determinates and that is fairly typical of many of the determinates in our climate. I hit tomato overload a while back too, but now that production is dwindling, I'm starting to worry about running out of tomatoes. I think most of mine are about done setting fruit---even a lot of the cherry types are stalling. Our highs have been mostly in the 104-107 range for the last couple of weeks, so the tomatoes are not happy campers. Carol, I'm glad Al got to do his ceremony. At the present time our county is not giving burn permits to anyone at all, even though in previous years they have done so (on a limited basis) during a burn ban. In the last 5 days, we have had three large "page all" fires, where all 15 departments in the county are paged out to one large fire. We've never had three page alls in one week before, much less in 5 days. It is too hot to be out there at fires for hours on end. I'd rather be home picking or eating or canning tomatoes or, as far as that goes, I'd rather be home doing anything at all. Scott, If there is a tomato plant that is a more reliable producer in our heat than Fourth of July, I cannot imagine what it would be. Super Boy produces as well for me as Fourth of July but the flavor is nothing to get excited about. Diane, No one in my family but me has had any of the Jaune Flammee' tomatoes this year, because I stand there in the garden and eat them as fast as I can pick them. Dorothy, For me, Tess's has always had amazing flavor. Since you have so much more rainfall than I do here, I wonder if the moisture is affecting their flavor. Dawn

I have two bhut jalokias and one naga dorsett growing, that I started on 2-1, and are already flowering - indoors, under HPS. The BJs are larger, but not by much, and the ND is the first one to have flowers that opened. Still have no idea when they will produce and ripen, but I started them very early, so I won't have to wait until Oct.! And I have a guy at work who is going to be the first to try them, that eats my gold bullets and makes comments like "I thought that was a gold bullet, not a cold bullet!" The red savinas definitely aren't what they used to be, and the testing confirmed my "unscientific" testing, though they used to be much hotter. One chocolate variety got him pretty well, but still wasn't what the RSs were years ago. I am hoping these will call his bluff... Here are the photos of their growth. It is strange, in that both loose many lower leaves, then where the leaves were, another stem is beginning to grow. Before the year's officially over, I thought I'd share two pics of my wintering peppers. I actually took both plants outdoors this morning, blasted the aphids off the Chocolate Hab, gave them both a mild fertigation, and then left them outside on the deck all day. Chocolate Hab, after a good rinsing of the aphids..... And my three year-old Hungarian wax. Slowly but surely it's greening up and regaining vitality. By March, I'll have it pruned down to force back-budding and branching lower on the trunk, making for a stronger plant capable of supporting more fruit. You can also compare how aggressively I pruned my Chocolate Hab....I don't just talk the talk, I whack the peppers, too ;) Josh
