My 'Final' 2011 Tomato Grow List

I sent in the "Santorini of Greece" tomato to the swap. After flooding, extremely high humidity, heat, etc. last summer, the Santorini was one of a handful of plants (out of 40+ varieties) that never showed a hint of disease and when everything else stopped producing during the worst of the heat, it continued to pump out tons of fruit. It definitely was the workhorse in my garden and will certainly be considered for another spot in the garden this season. The fruit is ribbed, probably around 4-6 oz. and was meaty like a paste but much more flavorful than most paste tomatoes I've tasted.

I planted all of my pepper seeds on March 3. They are in my basement which is around 60F so I put the starter trays on heating pads. So far, the ones that are up are eggplant, Big Jims, Hungarian Wax, Chimayos(Thanks Byron), Manzanos, Poblanos, Billy Bikers, Burpees Hot Mixture and a mixture from Beth at Peppermania. They are now under lights and I've already potted up the eggplant and Billy Bikers. The eggplant won the prize for being 1st. The ones that have not yet sprouted are Sandias and California Wonders. This doesn't surprise me since I remember them taking longer to germinate in previous years. John A

Dorset Naga...the worlds hottest chilli

I have two bhut jalokias and one naga dorsett growing, that I started on 2-1, and are already flowering - indoors, under HPS. The BJs are larger, but not by much, and the ND is the first one to have flowers that opened. Still have no idea when they will produce and ripen, but I started them very early, so I won't have to wait until Oct.! And I have a guy at work who is going to be the first to try them, that eats my gold bullets and makes comments like "I thought that was a gold bullet, not a cold bullet!" The red savinas definitely aren't what they used to be, and the testing confirmed my "unscientific" testing, though they used to be much hotter. One chocolate variety got him pretty well, but still wasn't what the RSs were years ago. I am hoping these will call his bluff... Here are the photos of their growth. It is strange, in that both loose many lower leaves, then where the leaves were, another stem is beginning to grow. Maybe this happens with habs out in my garden, but they are so packed together I don't notice, as when right in front of me like this (I usually don't start them this early). http://s24.photobucket.com/albums/c18/pepperhead212/Bhut%20Jalokia%20and%20Naga%20Dorsett/

Greenman's Peppers 2010 (pics)

Before the year's officially over, I thought I'd share two pics of my wintering peppers. I actually took both plants outdoors this morning, blasted the aphids off the Chocolate Hab, gave them both a mild fertigation, and then left them outside on the deck all day. Chocolate Hab, after a good rinsing of the aphids..... And my three year-old Hungarian wax. Slowly but surely it's greening up and regaining vitality. By March, I'll have it pruned down to force back-budding and branching lower on the trunk, making for a stronger plant capable of supporting more fruit. You can also compare how aggressively I pruned my Chocolate Hab....I don't just talk the talk, I whack the peppers, too ;) Josh
