Since I haven't been able to read lately, I've been making use of the webspace my ISP provides. I put up pictures of some of my bookcases if anybody's interested. Go here: De Gustibus, and click on "Woodworking Projects" or "Refinishing Projects" to see them. As is evident from the pictures, I really should be cleaning house, but I just hate it. I'm working on putting up some MP3 files taken from the LPs.

That is some very nice work. I like the koa wood one especially.
I want to be just like you when I grow up!
Seriously, when I retire I would like to do more "cultivated" woodworking. Right now I could build you just about anything from wood, but I don't have the tools and machines to do fine work.
As for bookcases, I have been lucky to find some nice ones at thrift stores over the past year. I found a half-bookcase (3 feet tall x 4 feet long) made of cherry for $11.25. That is known as a "steal". Bought some others as well, and got 2 full size bookcases free from my employer (still have piles of books on the bedroom floor though).

They're not cheap any more. I'm from the uk, And In belast holywood Ikea, in 2012 it was £27.50 for the white billy bookcase with 28cm depth, by 2014 they'd gone up to £35.00 by by 2018 £38.50 by 2022 £45 and now in 2026 they are £55 i think thats just unbelievable in 14 years the mark ups for what was always a cheaper reasonably priced book case is phenomenal they are Far too expensive for what they are and what they are made of. In 2012 it was £15 for the white gnedby cd tower, 2026 £39.00 incredible! In 2012 it was £35 for the oak veneered 28cm depth bookcase in 2026 it's £80, thats astounding, in 2026 £39.00 for a gnedby is too high considering it's only mulched up mdf fashioned into a bookcase. Inflation or not those prices are way above inflation, it's greed but need must! and ikea know that, which is why i still buy billy bookcases, because they still do what they've always done since 1979, but the prices need to come down on those as they're no longer affordable to people on small budgets anymore the way they were, very affordable.

I like it, and IRL I probably wouldn't have noticed it if someone didn't point it out to me. I once hired a cabinet maker to construct a bookcase to match an antique flatwall cabinet, which we'd converted to a TV cabinet. I gave him detailed drawings, and he even commented about the quality and clarity of my illustrations. The flatwall cab has no trim--flat slab on the top, straight sides and 'feet'. When the cabinet maker delivered the bookcase, I noticed that he'd added rounded trim to the slab top and shelf edges. His explanation was that he thought my design was too plain. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. I like the guy, so I let it go, and a few years later had him make two more bookcases to match the first--rounded trim and all. I'd prefer it my way, but I don't even notice it any more, and no one has commented that it doesn't match the TV cab.

I want to know what you plan to put on all those shelves first. That IMO decides the background . I do not like shelving filled with stuff that was bought to fill the shelves . I think if you have beautiful things to display then share those with us and then the background choice will be easy to decide.. Please do not do the TV as in thta picture unless you love visiting the chiropractor often .THis is by far my fave layout for TV , FP and a bit of display it does not need to be this style but keeps the TV at the proper height and allows some display and a great place to hang art .

That's quite a set of steps to shovel...but I'm envious-your postman brings your mail to the door? We have to struggle out to the curb mailbox. After having shoveled out the curb mailbox. (I feel so deprived....;-)

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I plan to build several bookcases this summer and photograph the process. It might be interesting even it one is not a woodworker.

Deep Roots, yes tools and decent lumber are expensive. The front door cast so much more than I had planned on that I quit woodworking for a couple of years to allow my savings to recover.

Cece, the postman comes to my door which one thing I like about the location. He won't deliver to my mother's house though so I get it at my place.

Nice work, disputantum. I like the pictures of the houses, too. My husband has a woodworking shop and has made us bookcases, picture frames and even some furniture over the years. I shudder to think what it would cost us to move all his equipment if we ever have to move. I can't imagine him parting with any of it. He does his own designs, too, and likes to post over at the woodnet forum at woodnet.net, I think. It's apparently a good place for sharing ideas and projects with others. Best of luck with your future projects. It takes a lot of patience, I think, to do some of those projects.
