Corn usually produces one cob per plant, but may produce two and occasionally (rarely) three. Once you have thinned your carrots, the thinnings are better discarded as they have usually lost the end of their tap root and will not grow well, if at all. You could always wait to thin carrots until they are big enough to eat as baby carrots.

Ditto what Robyn said about corn, one to two is pretty standard. Have you planted them in a clump? They need to be grouped together to get good pollination otherwise you get cobs with just a few kernels scattered here and there on them. If the carrots are eased out with their little tap root intact, try replanting. I've just done it, though I'll have to admit that only two out of about 20 survived. Still, that's two more carrots. Might be better to thin later as Robyn suggested and eat them as baby carrots.

Hey, thanks Robyn and Raymondo! I think the carrots which i need to thin are really close to eating as 'baby carrots' anyway - so instead of fussing i'll just use them in my stir-frys!! Great excuse to be able to plant a whole nother row of carrots anyhow!

Yes Raymondo, we planted the corn in a block of 6 plants in a small row, by 5 rows - just like Pete Cundall said to do! Wow, only one cob, (maybe 2!) per plant!! I was discussing the corn amount with hubby last night and he said that's what he thought and I told him 'nah! surely not - such a tall stalk will hopefully produce 4-5 cobs or more'! Woops, time to eat humble pie - again!

A lot of people find corn to be a lot of fertilizer for a few cobs. But it's incredible, and you get to mulch the stalks, and it's sweeter than any other corn you'll ever taste. I've put one in this year i got from Ray. It's called 8 cobs. They're small, but you apparently get 8 of them. Here's hoping.

We had three and four cobs per plant this year.

I know most people grow their carrots in rows, but I have found that if I sprinkle them in a 'patch' rather than rows it is easier to spread the seed evenly and less need for thinning. You can also mix fine seeds with sand and sprinkle them through a shaker. It helps with even dispersal.

With corn, it depends on the variety. I've seen some in catalogues that mention 4 per plant but I believe for most home gardens you can expect two. Last year we got two per plant, but I think if our summer was longer we may have got more as there appeared to be some new smaller ones growing further up the stem.

The density of your planting is also a factor. The more competition for nutrients, the less ears you get. I believe that's why commercial plantings with 10's of thousands of plants will only produce one ear each.

I used to eat fresh corn from the garden at my nan's house when i was a little tacker, and i remember them having the yummiest, sweetest taste ever! so, like you said Adam, the effort will be worth it if i can do it!!

Mabb, I thought the quantity may have something to do with variety. (i like the sound of Adams 8 cobs per plant - my type of corn!) Also an interesting factor on the commercial corn growers getting one ear per plant - i didn't think of that.

Well here's hoping for a good crop, just gotta keep the water up to the corn for a juicy bunch!

Last year my corn plant tips got revoltingly infected with aphids... which I tried to get rid of by hosing. As the water restrictions are in place her now and I primarily use grey water on the veggies now i was wondering wether there was a nother way of getting rid of them....

White oil works a treat.
1 part cooking oil to 10 parts water. Add a LITTLE washing up liquid, and shake vigourously. Spray on said Greeblies, and they migrate to their death, off the plant.

Out of my 22 corn plants this year, here are the results. (Half with 2 cobs, .....five with 3, five with 4.......and one that has 5 cobs!!!!!) That's how we roll in Melbourne Australia....we tear up landlord's suburban backyards and dig in. I pay enough rent in this overpriced metropolis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
