How does Miami compare to Darwin as far as climtae, UV strength, and ability to grow tropical vegetation UNPROTECTED?

Is the UV difference noticeable? Does the sun feel ALOT stronger?

i guess you mean miami usa?

well darwin as it is at the northern end of the tropics is close to the equatorial region, so summers will be very hot with lots of sun, when they aren't having lots of rain and their share of tropical storms (cyclones), humidity will be very high in summer months. winters will be more human friendly as heat and humidity will be at more comfortable levels and without the storms and rain is probably their best season. to put it in perspective they most likley have 9 month summers at least.

so would then expect that darwin would be very good for tropicals but there could also be problems with excess water.

don't live there just how i heard it is.

I should warn that this poster (not Len!) seems obsessive and has posted a lot of very ill-mannered messages in the American Tropical Plants forum.

Is anyone growing David Austin roses in the Tropics?

I'm NOT in a tropical climate -- far, far drier. But what Nik said: nikthegreek(9b/10a E of Athens, Greece) What the roses may find stressful as plants is not the heat or humidity but the lack of winter coolness That rang true for me. While not tropical, here in coastal Southern California, we also have No Winter Chill. In that situation, Austin roses that were perfectly well-behaved elsewhere morphed here into Jolly Green Giants ... growing 12- 14-ft. tall, and blooming only at the very top. If we cut them down, they responded by hunkering down and growing back to 12-ft., to produce one large bloom or cluster. After a few seasons of that, we had to acknowledge the advice we had received that these were not the ideal roses for our conditions. We still grow a few Austins . . . Golden Celebration is great here (but would blackspot for you). Prospero is one of my all-time favorites, as is Belle Story, and my DH loves Cymbaline.

You could ask these nice people: http://www.bovees.com/ Who are the US authorities on vireyas, apparently, However I would also try some Australian gardening forums if you can find them; specifically ones for people in Caires, Darwin and other truely tropical parts. The collusion between Commonwealth culture and tropical climate could well mean they are particularly inclined to growing such plants if they exist; even in mild, oceanic Sydney the vireyas are used as garden subjects so I think, overall, they probably have more expertise with them as a country than anyone in the US. Or even a Florida gardening forum though I suppose it's only Miami and south where conditions are similar to yours. Obviously the various standard southern indicas and southern native Azaleas grow around northern to central Florida but I don't know what their southern limit is. For example, I found this in google: http://www.camelliaglen.com.au/

I have a couple different varieties of pineapple. One took three years and produced a small fruit - but it was the sweetest pineapple I have ever tasted. It made a pup and I also planted its top, which took. I'm willing to wait another three years for a couple pineapples that sweet. I'd wait a decade, considering it is a very small plant and I can tuck it any number of places and just wait. The other makes a really large plant and has beastly serrated spines that make it impossible to weed near it. But the two I have of that variety produced stunning hot magenta fruits this year - they were basically worth the two-year wait for their ornamental value. I may have picked the first one too early - it was not edible. Or, the person who gave me the pups told me last night, it may have been an inedible one. Apparently some of the hybrids will produce edible and inedible varieties. In the hopes that it is edible, I'm waiting to pick the second fruit. Wish I had taken a picture when they were both on the plant and upright - they were really stunning. My friend also told me that she had been told that a pup from an inedible fruiting plant may produce edible fruit the next time. Anyone know more about pineapples than me? Wouldn't be hard since what I know is from two types of plants and a conversation at a cocktail party last night with a weekend gardener like me. :)

The climate of Miami is actually much more similar to that of subtropical Brisbane. As Len stated Darwin is much more similar to the torrid tropics (equatorial) and in some publications is refered to as subequatorial.

Mick,

Southern Florida is subtropical and although central and northern Florida may be subtropical by US standards it isn't really my idea of subtropical as many areas can't grow tropicals that will grow in Sydney.

About your site is very interesting to compare the other sites. The VERY DESTRUCTIVE CORE of SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE LARRY with extreme gusts up to 280 km/hr should cross the coast between INNISFAIL and MISSION BEACH between 7am and 9am MONDAY MORNING. DESTRUCTIVE winds are expected to commence along the coast between INGHAM and PORT DOUGLAS early MONDAY MORNING. GALES are already being experienced along the exposed coast in the warning area.
