There is a good one at Annangrove (Annangrove Grevilleas), and another at Marsden Park (Sydney Wildflower West), but they are probably just as far, if not further. I don't know of any close to the city - I think most people in the inner city just plant weeds and pay top dollar for them. It's a good thing you are much different!

If you are concerned about cost, there is another route you can go. Zuma Canyon Orchids in Malibu has a thriving decorate display business. They contract with hotels, businesses and upscale private homes to keep a number of pristine orchids on display at all times. When they are out of bloom, or even beginning to fade, they serve no longer any purpose for Zuma. They are sold as low as $5.00 each. I don't know if you get tags or if you get to choose colors but you can score some cheap Phaelies which are in prime condition and will bloom a year from now if looked after properly. Remember, when they were in bloom, they were good enough to grace the lobby of Marriott or some expensive home. Nick

Harborrose, Yes, read all her books; I have read most of them and they are a delight. She writes well which makes for easy reading. She wrote a wonderful book on daylilies and the early hybridizers of the fifties. It is a GEM! I have my own used copy now but would check it out of the library to reread every five years or so. You get to know those early daylily hybridizers as friends and she interviewed them all; most in person. The sad thing for me is every time I finish the book, I want to put my head down and bawl because they have become my friends by the end of the book and are now all deceased. Moldovan, who was quite young when the book was written just died last year. These are the early daylily pioneers of the fifties, especially in the area of tetraploids. Yes, I agree she is a savvy gardener and writer and I think much of her gardening interests were developed by those she met in her early gardening years-her deep interest in rock garden and alpine plants for example which she goes into in great detail in an earlier book. I think she has no interest in rose competition and that's what the avid rose gardeners were into mainly in her day. The OGR growers were few and far betweeen..... Now that you mention it, Elizabeth Park in Hartford is not that far away and is famous for its early ramblers and some of the OGRs. I would think she would have visited it. If you write her, it would be interesting to see what she says. Jim

The Eureka will get huge, unless you are sure it is on dwarf or semi-dwarf stock. Make sure you site it properly. This one in my neighbor's yard was photographed from 45' away standing uphill from it. The peak of the garage roof behind it is at least 25' above the base of this tree: May I ask why you want annuals? Evergreen perennials are so much more satisfying here, where you are as likely to be sitting on the patio in January as you are in July. One suggestion to deal with the poor soil - half of CA is nutrient-poor sand and the other half is greasy adobe clay, IMHO - is to make a cohesive design and put in above-ground planters. The sand makes for great drainage! Go look at big box center nurseries as well, right now. You'll see what the "reliables" here are, which might be quite different than what you were used to. Enjoy eating at Park Chow and Gordo's Taqueria! How I miss the Crumpet Shop from the 1970's, sigh.....nothing was better than freshly baked crumpets with lemon curd and Devonshire cream (okay, it was the glass jar stuff, but still - yum!).

The tree commonly known as Sydney Golden wattle is Acacia Longifolia. It's quick and easy to grow, and suitable for coastal planting but is not always terribly long lived. It's a good 'filler' tree, while other things in the garden are getting established. You should be able to get it at any native nursery or most regular nurseries, maybe even Bunnings. Cheers, Dee.

Nurseries selling tube stock are in the outer suburbs or in the country for reasons such as lower rental/land costs and closer to customers that buy in bulk.

Well I know one (only one) at Terry Hills, Thawa, I think it's called. I left there 8 years ago but if I remember right you go through the lights at the Terry Hills end of French's Forest road and proceed almost to the back of Australian Native Landscapes and Thawa tubestock Nursery is on your left hand (northern) side. It is (was) clearly signposted.
