All right, RP mystery lovers, have any of you read it?

I've read it and although I didn't like either of the main characters, i thought the book was well constructed.

My copy was from the library, I read only a few pages and decided that it was not for me. May I add that I am getting very hard to please these days!!

I just read it with my book group and we were riveted by it. We didn't much like the characters, but we were fascinated with what the author had done with them. The premise is clever, the characters are a roller-coaster ride, the end is something people either loved or hated, and the book as a whole was a page-turner. If you're looking for a happy, peaceful read, this is not it. Otherwise, I'd recommend it.

My gut feeling is that it is dark and disturbing...not the sort of reading I need in this dreary time of year.

I have not read it-I did read Sharp Objects and decided that the author was not for me. I read the description of Gone Girl and I admit that we can't all like the same sort of books and I decided to pass.

I read it too--got a galley before it came out. It was OK--definitely a psychological thriller, very harsh language, kind of intriguing and twisty plot but I was disappointed by the ending. Gillian Flynn is not an author for "gentle readers" if that matters to you. Pretty much what Sheri just said. :)

I am still not convinced I should read it. I do read a wide variety of books but am most happy when I care about at least one character in a story. If there is no-one likeable, it is difficult to care where a story line goes or what happens.
Anyone else have comments on it?

I also read it for book group -- I received it at our Christmas book exchange and have to decide if I will recommend for the group to read and discuss. It is dark, but it's a quick read. There is one character that I liked (Boney). Though it's not the type of book I typically read, it did keep me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen. I will probably recommend that the book group read it, although I'm not real sure what exactly we will discuss.

It's one of those books that you either love or hate. I thought it was pretty good and on that basis I bought her two previous books, which I thought were awful.

I agree with so much already said. I think it is good. I really cared about the characters in the beginning, then as I got to know them...yick! Just like people who you initially enjoy, then get to know them and their unpleasantness is all you see. I am glad I read it.

I was going to add to the thread about "when do you give up on a book", about Gone Girl. I really did not like it and gave up on it about two thirds of the way through. I would have given up sooner but there was such a fuss about it, I thought it had to get better. Reminds me of that joke with the punch line "there must be a pony". There was no pony here, at least not for me. Just a pile of horse manure.

Hmmm . . . I keep wavering with each comment. I get really mad at myself when I purchase a book I dislike. I will watch this thread for a while more in hopes of being definitively swayed.

Kathy, can you try checking the book out from a library? Then it won't matter so much whether you like it or not. I thought it was a well-written book and one of the better ones I read in the past year but opinions are so subjective I seldom rely solely on them for my reading selections. Even though I don't use the library very often, I did find Gone Girl there.

It has been decided for me. My daughter and I share Audible accounts and she has purchased it. She said she really like it and we usually agree. So, I will listen to it as an audiobook--and report back.

Well, I listened to the audiobook and it was very well-narrated with both male and female voices. Both narrators did a great job of capturing the feel of the husband and wife.

It was an easy listen and kept my attention all the way through. It certainly had its surprises and twists. While I did enjoy the listen, the ending made me feel queasy and uncomfortable. I do not like that.

This is a very difficult book to review, as it would be so easy to include spoilers. It is better to go into this book with no knowledge of the plot.

Overall, 3 1/2 stars for the story, 5 for the narration (out of five).

I actually liked Sharp Objects but only read a few pages of Gone Girl-I don't mind dark subjects, but just didn't like this book.

I tried to get into this last night. It did not appeal. So I turned to my history textbook and found that far more interesting. I don't know if I will stick with Gone Girl or not....

I rented it from my local library for my Kindle....When they say "Best Seller" it does not mean a thing to me anymore just like the movies ratings. If a critic has good reviews....it doesn't mean I will like it.....I am very picky and fussy these days and do not want to waste my time.....I belong to Neflix and rent movies from them that I know I would like.
