Pencil Pines

Hi folks,

I have a friend who wishes to buy qty 6 advanced pencil pines approx 3M tall. Can anyone advise me where we might look for them in or close to Brisbane? Thanks. Daniel

Hi Daniel,, I have been thinking about your wanted Pencil Pines. I have never seen any here so do they grow here, I know they grow in Melbourne as the neighbours at the back of our house there had them on both sides of the driveway. Maybe the Pencil Pines are different to the ones I know of do you have the botanic name it may help...Cheers..MM.

Hi Daniel,
I wish you well in your quest to find pencil pines in Brisbane as the cypress canker is killing most of the remaining pines in the Brisbane area, even in the cooler regions of South Queensland, Warwick, Tenterfield is also having the hot and humid weather increases that promote the spread of the cypress canker. As MM says they are beautiful in the South, but they are the fastest thing to die in these parts. Good luck. Peter r

I have seen some website said the height of GGs ranges from 20 to 40 feet, some said to 60 feet to 75 feet, and 10 to 20 feet wide. Really confusing. ==>>> nothing really confusing at all about it all most size estimates are are 10 years ... but being trees.. they have an annual growth rate.. and can grow at that annual rate for decades.. if not centuries ... take for example.. the post at the link ... discussing size at purchase.. establishment.. and growth rate ... [BTW.. the GW search function should get you a couple hundred posts on GG's ] as far as i am concerned .. in z5 MI ... they grow from the minute the ground thaws in spring.. until it freezes again in fall . in your zone.. yours should be growing year around ... i find it kind of entertaining.. when some talk about sheared trees on estates.. oh for lack of a gardening staff.. what we could all have.. lol ... one thing that i always wonder about.. is how you shear them.. once they are taller than you plus the ladder you own ... SAFELY!!!! finally ... again ... with the narrowness of your garden.. i dont understand how one contemplates 50 or 100 foot tall trees ... are you the owner??? ... surely a renter should not be making these decisions ... below are pix of mine.. 6 inches tall in 2000 .. Ha, ha, my theeth would not take it, I have just returned from a dentist, cracked two teeth over the last month!!! I have an old cranky Granberg, a shredder muncher that does it for me. Though I think I will be looking for a replacement soon as it is leaking petrol :-((((. This dental visit was very untimely. I also wanted to add there was something on this forum about oakville crimson spires, read it. It looks like they are talking about flowering pears or plums. How about we have a coffee when you make the trip north (my daughter used to call it south Geralton when she was younger, stopped now when she bought a house ten minutes from us)?

You say the garden bed is just under 2m wide - is this the air space you have to work with as well? Most trees with a height of 6-8 metres would have a width to match. If you are planting near a boundary, then nearly half of the width (and root area) will be on the other side of the boundary and the owners will have the right to demand that overhanging growth is removed. I am definitely not a lover of pine trees of any description, but the pencil pines sound like the logical choice. The other consideration is time. It's going to take quite a bit of it for any tree to reach 6-8 metres. You might like to consider roll down awnings on these windows to provide shade and privacy until the trees are tall enough to take over the role. I would also suggest that insurance is taken out to cover any future damage by invading tree roots to the neighbouring property. While there are many trees which are not regarding as having invasive root systems, old or damaged pipes which leak are an open invitation to any tree to "come in and have a drink". This step is more important when you are (a) planting near a boundary and (b) encouraging the tree to find its own moisture supply.

sadly, for those of us who don't live near metropolitan centers (it's well over a 120 miles much of it on windy two-lane roads for me to anything approximating such a thing) we may have to rely on mail-order nurseries and the often higher costs (especially with shipping) for our fix of some rare plants.. more often than not many garden centers do not have on-line listings current or otherwise of their offerings so it becomes a matter of "hunting and pecking" by phone or email to various nurseries and almost certainly a long drive taking (in my case) up to 3 hours ONE way or more to actually get to whatever nursery I find that indeed may have whatever rare and precious (or weird) thing I happen to be looking for. sometimes under those circumstances potentially higher-priced mail-order plants don't seem quite as expensive, LOL. that said, I've been lucky to have acquired so many plants already that if I had half a brain I wouldn't even look at another nursery again and instead limit myself to finding suitable spaces for the plants I have but HAVEN'T planted and of course looking after what's ALREADY in the ground, and while doing all that count my horticultural blessings instead of continually lusting after more!!!

Bunnings at Cannon Hill has Cupressus sempervirens 'Stricta', the traditional 'Italian Cypress' or 'Pencil Pine'. They also have a variety called Swane's Gold, a yellow cypress and Nitschke's Needle that forms a VERY columnar habit. There's a house down the road which has one that is probably as tall as the house, but very very thin. I bought two 'Stricta' today for $8 in potted colour sized pots. BTW, all these are vitually babies, just in their second year of growth, and about 40cm high.

P.S. Everywhere I look, I see cypresses in Brisbane, especially some very big, old ones. Where are the one's dying off?

hi there the conifers do get cypress canker in brisbane due to our humid weather and the drought conditions.. they become stressed........

there is a nursery in rochedale that sells them but we have to spray them to prevent canker
