Madonna, I have about 12 Brachychiton rupestris planted down my driveway, they have taken about 8 years to develop nice looking bottle bases. I have higher rainfall than they are use to, about 1800mm compared with about 500-1000mm, but they do fine if given well drained soil. They however hate being shaded out with a large leaves tropical rainforest plant- in this case I have about 3 which have started to rot because they are too shady and wet.
They would grow quite fine in your situation-however in the full sun they grow rather squat ~8m max.
They can handle frost and full sun once established, just water it in every couple of weeks for 6 months and it will charge.

Madonna, this is a picture of one of my Bottle trees.
I planted it when it was a six inch seedling eleven years ago.
At first it was by itlef and only in the last two years has it had a garden near it, succulents.
It is in not good soil and has had just enough water to keep it growing.
In the wild they are very tolerent to dry.

Believe it or not, Brachychiton rupestris grows ok in south west Victoria. I love them, have them planted in my garden for dappled shade. If it gets too cold, they defoliate in the winter time, but get a fresh batch of leaves again in summer. One I have has the prettiest red new growth. Some grow up nice and straight in the trunk, I like the stumpy odd shaped ones.

There is some beautiful Bottle Trees in Roma, Qld that grow along the main road. My husband was born in Roma and we used to see them regularly when we visited the relatives.

Bottle trees are very tough, can be slow if conditions are hard but quick growing if watered regularly. My remaining bottle tree was planted about two years ago and is now about 6 foot tall. It is only watered by rain but is mulched. We did have another one the same size but the cows and horses could reach it over the fence and apparently is very tasty!
