Has your machine been humming along making your Xmas gifts?

Sadly, mine haven't been BUT I have been doing some volunteer sewing for our local Salvation Army making some purses and totes from jean fabric. I did the same thing last year and was invited back for another year. I know this isn't the same as making gifts but it is giving something back so I feel good about it. Soooo what have you been sewing and working on......Budster

Have made nuttin! This year has gone too fast. Life is like a roll of toilet paper; the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes!

Making Christmas pillows. But, not for gifts. Just to make my first Christmas in my first apartment festive. And it's cheap too! I'm using some of last years fabric, because I did make gifts then. Always have stuffing on hand! The first pillow I did had a green side with a print of red Christmas bows and balls. The other side is a solid red with a green tree silhouette that I applicayed on. I'm going to do a white one with red strips to simulate a candy cane. Maybe I'll even make it in the shape of a candy cane... this is fun! There is something about the hum and interaction of and with a sewing machine that is so peaceful and relaxing and rewarding!

This isn't about h-birds, and it's more about buzzers than hummers, but it seems like a reasonable follow up anyway. There's a narrow path along one of my borders, between a mixed bed and a small pool - about 25' long and only 3' wide (the path; the mixed bed is about 10' deep) and for over a month now the racket from the mixed bed has been astounding. This border is backed by old spruce trees and has a long row of evergreen euonymous (not one of the invasives, this is 'Manhattan' or a similar large-leaved variety) between the trees and a row of tree peonies, mountain laurel and azaleas, underplanted with gingers, geraniums, and various other perennials. Closer inspection revealed that the racket was coming from the euonymous, which has been blooming for weeks. After an even closer look, I realized that the buzzers were not bees at all, but flies. I can't detect any odor from these flowers, but there must be one, and it must not be anything that would appeal to people. Are there other plants that attract flies by the millions? These bugs (or are they insects?) don't seem to congregate anywhere else in the yard, and don't seem to be doing any harm. And, they don't scare anyone the way the bees that are swarming the clethra do.

Here is a post for sugar shakers to make with kids that I posted a couple of years ago. Someone else on here gave me the idea to add cinnamon and now we call them 'cinnamon sprinkles'. We make these almost every year and my kids love it. I buy the cheapest generic salt and pepper shakers I can find. We make them in Christmas colors. Every child gets a bag with a cup of sugar, food coloring, and cinnamon to shake. Leave one bag without food coloring. It adds a little variety in the layering. Also, I find it helps to dry them in the oven a little while so it doesnt clump. It may need to be a two day project for the class. Keep a plate or bowl under the shakers when you are filling them to catch the spills. At the end, make a little tag saying to use the cinnamon sprinkles on hot buttered toast for cinnamon toast. Tie on with curly ribbon. It makes a nice gift because it is consumable and the kids do get to help with a majority of the work. Here is a link that might be useful: Sugar Shakers

jae, I wish I could, but I just made them up as I went along. They are pretty simple, mostly single crochet with a little double crochet on the hats and purses. For the hats, I started out at the top center of the hat, increasing enough to make it lay flat and form a circle. Then when I got it as big as I thought I wanted it, I started decreasing quite a lot to bring it back in to fit the size of a girl's head. I used my step daughter to test the size. They're pretty stretchy so I had a lot of 'forgiveness' in the actual size. I wish I could tell you better.

Toya, That's scary! You have my sympathy. I'm wondering how so much blood can get out through a tiny needle puncture. But that's good, because bleeding serves to wash out a wound, and unless you have been sewing on dirty fabrics or your hands were dirty, the needle is unlikely to have left many bad germs. You can probably rest easy tonight. But an under-the-nail infection would be harder to deal with than a simple finger puncture, so if you have any lingering fears, why not give your doctor a call? Needle in finger has happened to me multiple times in my life and fortunately has never resulted in an infection, but it has never been so horrifying as the things that happened to some of the people here. But now--at an age when I certainly should know better--it happened again a couple of days ago as I was sewing masks for some family members. Only this time, instead of the needle running into my finger, my finger apparently leapt to meet the needle. I meant to remove the plate and clean up the lint down around the bobbin and elsewhere and didn't think to remove the needle. Somehow, although there was enough space for my forefinger to impale itself on the needle, it was a hard job figuring out how to twist my finger so as to get unimpaled! Reading all these accounts, I can't help wishing that sewing machines had some sort of button or lever on their left side, that would raise the needle extra high, something like the way a jet pilot can get speedily ejected from a plane that is going down. There are times when being able to move the wheel might help, but there it is, way over on the other end of the machine and inaccessible when your right hand is being held in place by the needle.

I've been doing B'day presents. Y'all I know I've got the 3 diva cousins with "christmas" birthdays. One was yesterday, one's party is tomorrow and Chief Diva turns 8 next Sunday.
Here's Haylee's B'day party outfit I made and Madison is with her. I told Budster earlier this week that she's growing.

I need to make Christmas stockings. I'm not happy w/ the ones we have (DH won't let me make the kids use their actual socks, the way we did as kids), and I don't want to buy them, no matter how nice they are. I want to make them.

I'm not sewing gifts this year. I figured the older grandkids are probably tired of getting jammies for Christmas. I am, however, just finishing a "fall" outfit for the oldest GD, that I should have finished a month ago. I do ok if I can just sit down at the machine, but it seems hard to do these days. I'm with Keepem on this one...must be "the Quickening".

I'm making my niece and nephew jammies -- it's my first year giving sewn gifts so they should be happy with them. Last year the handmade gifts were crocheted. :) What kid doesn't need another pair of cute flannel jammies? Niece's are done; nephew's fabric is sitting on my cutting table and will probably get done tomorrow.

I also just bought some cute food-themed fabric and I'll probably use that to make placemats and potholders for my SIL.

My mom, after seeing the quilt I made my son, has requested one for her own bed. If it's not a big complicated thing (big pieces!) I think I can get it done by Christmas!

I'm in the Nuttin category too. I'd like to get a terry robe done for my son and a couple sports-themed towels for my nephews. And a swimsuit cover done for my daughter. And a jacket for my husbands dog.

However, I'm a CPA and if it ain't done by now, it's not going to happen. Maybe I'll have time to squeak in one of those reversable kleenex covers though.
