Is is possible for a tree to survive transpanting if it has had some of it's roots lopped off?

Yesterday we moved a 5' tall golden penda - it was a bit of an awkward job and we cut through a couple of finger sized roots. The penda went straight into it's new spot but some leaves wilted amost immediately. I trimmed off some tiny wilted tips this morning. It's a hot day and I'll give it a quick spray after the sun goes down. I've had the hose just dripping on it for 24 hours now.

What are it's chances of survival?

Is there anything more I can do to help it?

I would trim it back a bit to give it a fighting chance. I have moved heaps of trees, even when I lived North of Townsville I moved trees 3mts tall and they survived in the heat, did you cut the roots of nice and neat with the secateurs you could give it a feed with seasol thats should help the roots. Thanks Misty - yes, we cut the roots. I gave it a drink of fish fertiser. It wasn't looking too happy this afternoon. I thought about giving it a bigger trim, but thought it might stress it more. I'll probably have to do that tomorrow as it was looking a bit limp.

Why not just sow your carrots and parsnips in large plastic totes with drainage holes in them? Sow them as you would in the ground and just let them grow to maturity in the totes. It seems like starting them in plug trays and transplanting them is a little too obsessive, but that's just my opinion. There are clear plastic protectors for those 4-ft fluorescent light bulbs, thin and fairly cheap. They contain the glass if the tubes should break. I saw them at Home Depot a few years ago. Another way would be to get some of that thin plastic (used for No Tresspassing, Beware of Dog, For Sale signs), and make sets of those dividers like those used (cardboard) to separate wine bottles. Fernwoods, I second your notion. I just finished doing what you have in mind, moving my excess runners to a nearby 6" raised bed. Did this successfully in Zone 5/MI Oct 1. I prune all leaves except the smallest, plant, water well and lightly scatter straw about. After a frost, I plan to 'plasticize' the bed. Early in the spring, I will foliar feed twice and wait for the feast. Would suggest thinning out any 'unmoved' runners, so the remainder are able to produce their best. Good luck!

80 isnt bad... how cool will it get at night??? a recovery period is the key .... not the peak temp at 4 in the afternoon in October ... i would probably just plant them.. they are just arbs.. not some foo foo exotic .... otherwise.. moisten some potting media... and pot the whole wad together in one pot ... and keep them as cool as possible.. and never let the pot itself be in sun ... no need to pot individually.. you are just HOLDING THEM OVER .... and if there is an extreme day or two while potted ... put them in the cool basement.. but not for 2 weeks... no pail of water nonsense for more than a day ..... they are not aquatics ... will check back in tomorrow morn ... ken ps: any idea how to plant them.. ??? native soil.. etc????
