We had one in the yard where I grew up. The neighborhood kids and I would pluck twigs to chew on.

My mother had a cousin that would dig up the roots in the fall to make tea -- a rural Southern thing I suppose. The flavor is so distinctive ! Delicious!

My grandpa, the quintessential outdoorsman, would always tell us that drinking sassafras tea was a natural bug repellant.
