Exciting times!

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that after planting my first ever garden i am reaping the benefits!! Heaps of tomatoes, corn, beans, carrots, beetroot and stacks of potatoes!! Didn't realise i would get so many potatoes from 25 plants - i love those type of veggies! Pumpkin failed (not enough water, me thinks?) Last night after work i bottled 8 big bottles of sliced beetroot (yummy!) - i hope it works! How long do i leave it now?

Question? What can i plant now? I live on the north-west coast of Tassie, and it is starting to cool off in the mornings. Am i too late to try broccoli & cauliflower? I have been bitten by the veggie bug and it won't let go.

25 potato plants. I think you'll be eating them for a while. Have you tried Kipflers?. they are yummy tatties. broad beans can go in now. Do you get frosts?. if not, there are quite a few winter things you can grow.

Good stuff Lyn. I've never regretted growing my own veggies. It's just so rewarding.

Jon-dear, I have built my own high tunnels for a fraction of the cost of pre-made ones. I have one tunnel, that was premade, but I had to tear it down and rebuild it. The person was selling it for less than I could build a new one for. I have 6 high tunnels that I grow all winter long in. I sell through our online market and at a winter farmers market. We also eat really good all winter long. Thank you, Lisa! I remember my very first home with a yard... I didn't know half of what I know now about gardening, but I dove in and began creating garden areas, filling them with perennials and bulbs... it looked pretty good, considering it was my first attempt at perennial gardening! If there was any advice I could give a gardener just starting out, it would be... amend your soil before planting, as you're digging your beds... mulch well, and finally... research your plant choices before planting. If you begin with good soil, know what you're planting, and protect your gardens for winter, you'll have good success... and you'll be a happy gardener!

I grow loads of different sunflowers every summer, and am always open and interested in hearing about new varieties that I don't have yet. This is not the way to do it though! Besides I'd much rather hear about personal experiences with the flowers than a standard commercial blurb that one could get off just about any website. That's not why most of us come to this forum! Also I'd like to point out that "Indian Blanket" is a sunflower I grow, but GardenWeb informs me that it is not in their database because it is not a "recognized" cultivar, or something like that. They responded to me and said: "We cannot find any record of this cultivar having been registered anywhere. With all due respect, there are far too many nurseries that make up names and market them with no formal registration/patent...If you can locate the name of the person/nursery that registered/patented it and the year, we will be glad to include it. The information will have to come from a university.edu, or society or botanical garden.org, or something similar, not a commercial enterprise." Just FYI.

Don't be fooled by the "sunny Saskatchewan" slogans. Keep in mind that Saskatoon is several degrees of latitude north of Toronto. Our winter days are shorter, significantly colder (average is about 10 degrees lower than in Toronto), and quite gloomy in the first half of winter. It's the second half of winter that you really start to see the sun. It's just that we have a greater *percentage* of sunshine in our winter days, and again, most of that is apparent in the second half of winter. Because our summer days are significantly longer than Toronto's, and with a somewhat higher percentage of sunshine in these months, we end up having a sunnier climate. I have a greenhouse but I wouldn't dream of using it from December through February. It's prohibitively expensive. Much better would be to adopt the ideas suggested by folks above to maximize the light captured by a non-greenhouse structure and supplement with artificial lighting. This will also help with cooling in the summertime. Another thing you'll have to get used to is that our summers are several degrees cooler and several weeks shorter than those of Toronto. Be prepared to handle freak frosts in early June. This means covering tender crops when required. Cool nights can occur anytime during the summer, so if you plan on growing anything that loves heat, you'll need an unheated greenhouse. If you can handle a 45 to 60 minute drive and budget for equipment, I strongly encourage you to think about buying a home instead of a condo. Lyn, good stuff! Always happy to hear somebody's success story. :)

I am not terribly familiar with your climate zone, but I guess you could still be in time for Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Kohlrabi, Snowpeas, Swedes, Parsnips, Brusselsprouts, Leeks, Onions, Carrots. Something like that.

Please don't forget the golden and white beetroots. they are delish, and you look very cool.. I got mine from eden seeds

Hi there,

I'm also on the NW Coast and have (am) planting the following:
Cauliflower - it's a perfect time to plant now
Carrots - last chance to get them in
Cabbage - A perfect time - I'm trying the miniature ones and red cabbage.
Broccoli - you'll get the best crop in the cooler months if you plant now.
Beetroot - I make successive sowings every month because I juice them. As suggested, try the golden ones.
Asian greens - a wide variety - they crop in a short time and make a good fill in between seasons. I'm doing Bok Choy and Choy Sum.
Cos lettuce - hardier than ordinary lettuce
Parsnips - if you can get them to strike they go well here.
Snow peas - plant next month.
Sow lots of annual herbs now or if you have herbs seeding let them go for it!
Turnips if you like them - I'm doing an experimental planting of Celeriac, Artichokes and I'm going to try for Florence Fennel too.

A comment on the pumpkins - they have been woeful this year - last year I had so many my neighbours used to run at the sight of them - this year two paltry little ones hanging on the neighbour's side of the fence. Make sure you buy good seed - many of the self sown from bought pumpins have been deliberately made infertile.

Autumn is a much more reliable time for planting. Enjoy your garden.

Oops - I nearly forgot the most important LEEKS! They are great growers here and will go well to make great winter soup with all those potatoes. Do successive plantings now and next month.

Adamus, yes i love the kipflers (my neighbor grows them for the restaruants - funny how they have become 'gourmet' now!) so, we have been overwhelmed with kipflers - good thing i say!

Yes, i do get frosts in winter, so some frost hardy plants will be on the cards.

Linda, thanks so much for all your information - will take that on board and see what i can do over winter. And at least i know i didn't intentionally murder the pumpkins!
