On giving them a good spanking to make them flower, that is generally true, but true to many if not all flowering plants, especially wooded ones. I do that to my bonsai wisteria each year and it flowers away like mad. If I don't, it doesn't. The same affect can be achived if you cultivate around the root zone and especially if you have to cut through a strong root for one reason or another. La vraie raison, c'est que les porte-greffes en usage là -bas sont des hybrides, à multiplier de bouture.Conséquence: des virus à la pelle... Pour moi, l'avantage c'est surtout une plus grande longévité et une reprise mieux garantie.En effet, tous les rosiers n'acceptent pas les porte-greffes standard.Exemple: "Empereur du Maroc" ne donne rien sur R.Laxa. 'Le Vesuve' does well for me, even though I am only about 10-15 miles away from the SJHRG. Most chinas are not happy for me, so I think it is above the others in resistance. With all those roses grown in close proximity and no intervening plants, SJHRG has a serious monoculture issue. Not their fault; that is the way the garden is designed, but it does increase disease pressure beyond what most of us face. The volunteers work devotedly and to their best, and I noticed just the other day that the garden is looking very good just now.
