paring down my rose list
Comments (17)ken-n -Good to hear about Elizabeth Taylor. Going to love that rose I'm sure!! Gemini should be okay in the garage. Can't hurt to try. It seems to have so many different looks. Royal Amethyst - great to hear that. I'm getting it for sure. What do you mean about Blue Girl being like Royal Amethsyt. Do they look the same or just both are great roses?? Yeah, good-bye Just Joey - looks like a rose that would need a lot of heat - which we don't get. I'm still not so sure about Elle. Predfern - Good to know that Evelyn seems to be a real winner!! I want to stick with the roses that the local greenhouse provides. They don't have Francis Blaise. But good to know for the future. Krista - Evelyn just looks better and better. Glad to see you like Perfume Delight. Can't wait to smell it!! I love the saturated colors. I actually had Yves Piaget before, but my husband said that the pot had frozen to the ground so he couldn't move it into the garage. I was sooooo disappointed since I really loved that one. Can't wait to get it again. New Zealand was one that I wasn't sure about. Good to hear it's worthwhile Iowa Jade - Yves Piaget is very pink here. Is it red where you are?? Everyone seems to love Gemini - looks like a winner. Seil - if you really liked Elle, then I think I'll give it a go. I really like vigor in a rose. Hmmm.... Just Joey....cheapie bag rose might have been the problem. But then again, not. hmmmmmm Thank you all!!! Thank goodness for all of you!! Carol...See MorePlease help narrow down my list
Comments (6)They all are listed as 'hardy' which the catalog defines as hardy through zone 5. Because of my closeness to Lake Michigan we're actually zone 5b. Austin's cold-hardy list is more focused on zone 3 or 4. Some of the above roses may be more sensitive than others, which I'm curious to hear about, but I think they're all pretty much in the ballpark. Blackspot is also a concern of mine. I've heard some mention that some of the older Austins didn't hold up so well to it and I want to make sure these are newer varieties. Thank you for the concern though. I'm sure for someone in zone 9 we can kinda look like the frozen tundra. :) I grew up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and trust me, there's a huge difference between zone 3 and zone 5. I'm living in the balmy south now. lol...See MoreCould you help me cut down this list?
Comments (26)It makes me sad that I cannot find a better picture than this to show you my Sonia Rykiel. This is just one late season flower and yet it formed this lovely thing. This rose creates the prettiest colored and deliciously scented flowers. And they are in clusters. The plant grows large and wide but the roses come all along the canes if you dont force them to be upright. I let mine sprawl but tie the canes in the way to bamboo poles and a metal trellis was pushed in the back to provide support and keep the canes from blocking the walk. This is one of my favorites along with DA's Kathryn Morely for color and shape. But where Kathryn holds her blooms up, Sonia lets hers hang sometimes because of the weight of the huge flowers in a cluster. Fine with me. I like looking up at them. If I had to do it again, I would give this rose a nice big trellis on a wall and keep tying it in like a climber. It is thirsty. It wants the best of everything. There's a wait between repeats and extreme heat spoils the blossoms. This rose has a complex beautiful perfume. Jude the Obscure is like that for me. Different and wonderful. It stands out from the rest and I never met anyone who smelled it and didn't say it was one of the best roses they ever smelled. I grow a few stingy DAs for the scent/color/shape of the blooms. Sonia is more generous than any of them. She has been disease free for me. I love this rose. I had to move it a few times to find the right spot and then wait for her to settle in. I planted an Abe Darby across from her and they are looking about the same size and growth habit. I'm glad I took a chance on this rose. SdlM is a classic. You have the climate for it and it is a workhorse. Plus it smells great and looks stunning. Lots of us who got SdlM are now growing the sports because we like it so much. Every year it gets better and better. The only thing I ever had issues with was a little mildew now and then. I think with more sun, I probably wouldn't have it....See MoreWould some of you help me pare this seed list down?
Comments (6)Thanks so much for your warm welcoming attitude, Pitt. I just didn't want to post too much. I have a tendency to want to grow EVERYTHING that is gorgeous and interesting to ME, and very often customers want to know what "this" flower is and "that" flower is, never knowing it existed! There are some here that are OBVIOUSLY not suitable for cutting (stem length-alyssum/hollyhock/morning glory, too "wild & rangy"-like ratibida, not long enough lasting-papaver?, or just not worth it in a zone with a short growing season like mine) but if something here "seems" unable to be cut, but YOU KNOW CAN be cut for SHORT bouquets, please inform me! I don't have that much more room in my yard, so I really need to pare this list down! Also, if any of these are much better GROWING FROM AN ESTABLISHED PLANT, instead of by my starting from seed, would you mind letting me know?
