I didn't report on my other climbers grown on trellises one on each side of a path progressively shadier- La Biche- 5 yrs, a few canes 8' at most, balls early in the season but keeps on blooming a long time, supposedly is Mlle. de Sombreuil, Dream Weaver- 5 yrs, sensational some years, last year had some trouble defoliating with blackspot (I have a no-spray, sink or swim garden), 4-5', small striped red/white blooms, Marechal Niel- 3 yrs, not very vigorous, one or 2 3'canes, maybe one or 2 flowers last year. Champney's Pink Cluster- 3 yrs, 6+' multiple canes, lots of blooms for perhaps one long flush, then just a few, Jeanne La Joie- 2 yrs, rather close to a large cedar, 4-6' canes, sparse bloom so far is all I can remember, Climbing Cecile Brunner- 1 yr, several 6' canes, once blooming, also in the last shady spot. I hope to see more bloom on him this year.

You mentioned you were considering Lady of Shalott. Here is my experience after several years growing. Many of her canes are flexible not strong like Quick or Crush. They do toughen up as they age but it takes a while for mine. This was taken at 1:30 today in our heat. It opened this morning. This is a bloom that opened yesterday afternoon, taken at 1:30 today Also taken at 1:30. Center flower will look this way by late afternoon today or late tomorrow morning. By the end of day this bloom will be ugly brownish but the petals will not drop cleanly. What I have discovered is that L of S will put out lots of flowers to compensate for lack of staying power but only if you flood her with water. The Lady seems to be a heavy drinker. Mine looks especially nice from a distance because color shows up. If you do not have the time to clip dead flowers she starts to look a bit trashy with all those brown ones hanging about. Wonder how the Quicks and Lav Crush would look on your fence mixed with a couple the Shalotts for contrast. Not the soft pink you were wanting however.

Thanks a lot for all the wonderful suggestion. We used to have a line of cypress along the fence giving us a lot of privacy. I got rid of the trees for the roses, but I really hope the climbing roses could provide both beauty and privacy. I think I could sacrifice a little thorn for beauty, as long as they are not like those epic thorn on New Dawn. So here are my latest climbing roses selection. Yellow - Crepuscule, Teasing Georgia, Reve d'Or Dark Pink - Peggy Martin, Pretty in Pink Eden, Raspberry Cream Twirl Since other flowers were planted only 5 feet away from the fence, there is not much space left for shrub roses between the fence and other flowers. The only way is up the fence. However, I did find enough space in front of the Tea Olive for a shrub roses and I like the suggestion of Belinda's Dream.

Diane, I love the thought of all those cute little birdies hiding safely in the Snowball Viburnum tucked in away from the evil hawks. We have so many hawks here. I definitely need a few of those shrubs. The hawks make their rounds daily sending our chickens into a fenzy whenever they circle over them. The turkeys just stand there like saying, "Make my day!" or maybe they are just stupid. Lol You are truly the Fairy Godmother of Quail! They are so naughty to eat up all the seedlings. I wish we had wild quail. I never underestimate the power of bird poop! I had this tropical plant (Monstera deliciosa) that I had to overwinter in the greenhouse at our last place, in zone 9a. It was probably 8 yrs old at the time and very large. I had fertized it with all kinds of stuff, given it fish fertilizer etc. Still no fruit. Kinda gave up on that venture. People said it probably would never fruit in my zone. It was too cold . One year, we had adopted a bunch of Key West chickens from a rescue place. Key West was trying to cut back the chicken populatiin there because they were getting out of hand! These birds were were positively feral. They ended up getting out of their nice new coop/pen we made for them when an oak branch fell on it. We couldnt catch these crazy birds & they took to roosting on our greenhouse frame at night (we take the plastic off in the spring, summer, fall) . Of course, they were pooping all over my favorite tropical plants. I was so mad. Every morning I had to go out with the hose and spray off all the poop. Hubby got a big net and we still couldnt catch these psychotic chickens. They would screech like banshees and fly way up into the trees then come back and sit in the gh frame as soon as we left! If you managed to get ahold of one, they drew blood. I was exasperated and worried they would kill everything with their hot manure. One morning, I was spraying poop off the Monstera and low and behold, that thing had a fruit started!! It has bloomed every year bearing increasingly more fruit, ever since, with the addition of the magical wicked Key West Chicken poop :D
