Ladybirds, ladybirds and more ladybirds!

Since I started work back in February, my garden has not been getting the attention that it's used to (or that I'm used to either!! :)) )

One garden in particular has been badly neglected. So I decided to bite the bullet over the weekend and really get into it.

Honestly the daisies had just about taken over and weeds were even taller!

and that awful runner grass.....eek!

BUT the most amazing thing....there were ladybirds everywhere!!!!!!!

Mainly on the daisies I think and there were anything up to 20 of them on some of them but, at least, a couple on every one.

It was truly amazing. I've never seen that many anywhere before.

and you can be sure I carefully shook everything I pulled out before it got chucked into the bag.

What a wonderful freebie! Maybe it pays to neglect the garden a little bit. Lol.

Oh, Annie, I can just see all those little Ladybirds sitting and watching you clean out their happy home. boo hoo.
They will be thanking you for not putting them in the bag though.
Marion, who has just found some of the little black and gold ones nibbling away at some Powdery mildew on the roses.

PM2, I ordered a few things from Big Dipper Farm last fall when we first started landscaping our new home, and then again in the spring. The plants are small, but have always been healthy. They have an excellent selection, and usually send a little bonus with the order. I've been very pleased with the company, but my garden is full now, so until I get rid of some more lawn, I won't need to order from them again. Besides, I have a whole drawer full of seeds to winter sow, and have no clue where I will put all of the plants. I keep saying to myself, "You can always buy more containers," but eventually you won't be able to walk across the porch to get in the front door, LOL! As far as soil moisture goes, the perennial bed is irrigated with a drip system, so it does receive some water, but I live in a high desert climate, so we have very little rain in the summer months. I definitely wouldn't call the soil wet. The 'Overdam' seems perfectly happy. I even moved one of them twice this summer, and that one is only slightly smaller than the one that didn't get moved at all. I've tried four different ornamental grasses, and this one is my favorite so far. Bonnie

Yes there are so many different kinds of ladybirds Inga and its great to see them on the roses..and we do have them with spots there is also a 26-28 spot one that eats some vegetables or the leaves on them but thankfully there is only the one bad one that I know of.. Its amazing what two days can do as we have had a couple of warm spring days and when I went to brush them off the roses this morning they were all gone from that bed that has about thirty roses in it a relief I tell you, then the other menace comes I find the new buds of Just Joey bored through with bud grubs in them... We have a few ladybirds around and they are not a pest. Try soapy water from the washing machine or put a bucket under your laundry tap to save the soapy water when you wash your hands. Throw (I used to dip the branches of my Gardenias in the bucket) the waste water over the plant and around the base to help kill the eggs (?) in the soil. If you don't treat the soil, they keep hatching and re-infesting. You have to treat the underside of the leaves as well.

I have heaps on my plants too Annie, yesterday when I pulled a couple of silver beet leaves to feed to the chooks, I found the three plants covered with them so I put a lot on to a leaf and took then over to the roses, funny that would you believe there were no aphids there, someone is doing their job very well as a couple of weeks ago that used to be the first job of a morning after feeding the chooks I used to go around and squash them all, or rub them off the roses. Now isn't nature wonderful with its little workers...Cheers..MM.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the drought?
I haven't watered that particular garden or anything in months.

I dont know, as you say you haven't watered for months, where I water the silverbeet every second day.
Got to have something green for my girls to eat, not having any green grass anywhere.
Strange that Annie, but someone will have a answer..MM.

Lucky you Annie,bonzer lttle creatures,have them all over my roses,they don,t mind the sprays I use but give them room if I do spray,greencroc.
