those look like soil millipedes. They do eat decaying plant matter in the soil. If you have small seedlings you might want to keep them away to prevent accidental feeding from them. Think of them as composting worms with a lot more legs

I loved that my kale burst into flower this spring. I was glad I hadn't pulled up the old stalks last fall. I was also glad when the aphids it attracted, attracted ladybugs. I was putting my dish water out on the bottoms of the kale plants, not trying to get rid of the aphids, rather, trying to use all my water since I'm here in the very dry Southwest. But... all of a sudden there were a lot fewer ladybugs. So, I think that they must spend some time on the ground level part of the plants. Maybe that's where they lay their eggs??? I've stopped putting soapy water anywhere near the kale, and it does seem like there's a gentle increase in ladybird numbers. Does anyone else have any experience with this sort of thing???

I am an avid lover of caterpillars and I had two very small (less than 1/4 inch) long Black Swallowtail caterpillars on my parsley. I was hunting for more and found little tan and brown speckled critters with wings sitting on my parsley seed heads. There must have been at least a hundred. I have no idea how to get rid of them without hurting my precious swallowtails! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My favorite Ladybird story is about her driving down the highway, probably in her Cadillac, & passing a farmer mowing his pasture. Just as she drove by, he went to work on a big stand of Indian Paintbrush & Gaillardia. Ladybird stopped the car & got out & walked, in her high heels, to the fence, & tried to talk the farmer into leaving the wildflowers. Finally, she leased that part of the pasture for the remainder of wildflower season. Rest in peace, Ladybird. Your Texas is a more beautiful place for your having been her.
