An exciting day....new rose bed unveiled

Hi all

Well, after a very long time, the new garden bed is almost finished.When we bought the house ,the back was a jungle we had to remove everything inc a concrete inground spa with falling down trellis/pergola,a riot of overgrown plants.It all had to be redone.Its a pity I dont have the before picture.

Anyway...presenting our new rose garden(where the old spa used to be)

There are still a few small jobs to do...I have to stain the pillar the urn is standing on and we need to place timber around the bed.

I can't believe it is done after waiting for all this time!

Now I have planted many of the roses I had in large containers..only about 15 containers to go from 50.

I have plans for them!:))

Hi Michelle it is looking so good you have worked very hard but what a wonderful achievement.
My Just Joey opened its first bub yesterday a big disapointment all eaten on the edges.
Your Urn and Pillar look fantastic and blend in well. Those Foxgloves are very pretty.
Are you going to leave the last 15 roses in the pots, or do you have a future home for them
Maybe plans for another garden bed, or have you ran out of room, looking forward to more pics.

MauveGirl8 -- I plan to stay here for a few years. I haven't even yet applied to school, and the program I'm intending to complete is 5-6 years. My next move will be way south -- Florida. As such, there are a lot of things I have that won't work there, so I wouldn't take them with me. And in any case, I'm not going to dig anything out. If I want to "bring any with me" it will be via rooted cuttings. And before I go, I intend to share some other rooted cuttings with friends -- and my landlord. He and his wife will be building a new home on empty land in the near future, and I said I'd be happy to share anything he'd like for his new yard. Certainly I'll be bringing along my "pot pet collection", and cuttings of anything appropriate for Florida that I got from Vintage Gardens that isn't available elsewhere. And by that time, I'll also make an announcement here for anyone interested in "hard to find" things I nabbed for this garden. For example, the Hybrid China 'Nouveau Monde' from VG doesn't seem to be available anywhere else. I'm using it as a climber against a raised back deck railing. The few flowers it had when it arrived were very fragrant. I posted two pics of it on HelpMeFind from when I first repotted it. Since then, it has grown quite vigorously -- one cane trained horizontally against the railing is easily 10' long from the ground. :-) ~Christopher

Hi guys, I'll like to thank you for comments, you're very kind :o) Aliska, you're right. Making plants association and colours combination it's a lot of thought, but it's also a lot of fun :o))) My garden needs much work especially in grooming (I hope this is the correct word) and watering. Weeds are few, plants in the beds are planted close togheter and the beds are all thickly mulched. I try to do not use pesticides, so my Roses are spryed just once per year. Enjoy some other picture! :o) This is probably my best favorite Rose of all: 'Odorata'! The bush in the photo is on his second year in the garden: he's 2 meters wide and 1,5 meters high, completely covered in wonderfully scented blooms all year round!! In the background, there's the buff and peach flowers of 'Safrano' Another little beauty - I love white Roses- 'Baby Albéric', supposed to be a bushy, reblooming sport of Albéric Barbier. A very worth growing variety. Another not widely known Noisette, 'Solfatare', traited like a shrub A corner of the formal pond in front of the house Roses, roses, roses!! ... 'Mme Louis Leveque', a Moss Rose The sweetly fragrant, princess of beauty and elegance 'Céline Forestier' Not a Rose, but a Poppy... California Tree Poppy ;o) - Romneya coulteri And more Roses... 'Louis Philippe d'Angers' and 'Le Vésuve' reflecting in the water... Ciao! :o)

Anne, I have so thoroughly enjoyed your posts and the tales and pictures of your lovely garden through the years. It is heartwarming to know that you are keeping the property in the family and that you seem excited about your "new home." I look forward to seeing the progression. It looks quite lovely from your slide show. I have downsized my garden, not by choice, but my husband spraying my roses with Roundup by mistake. Oh, well, c'est la vie. It's just money as they say. I cannot start over so the few roses I have remaining are the ones I will cherish and coddle and hopefully keep out of the reaches of Roundup. Please do post pictures as you move forward. I wish you every happiness in the world and it looks like Santa already knows your address. Keep in touch with the garden and with your friends here at FriendCorner.

I get the blues when the days are short, and it's too cold to be in the garden. I don't let myself get too excited about gardening, but this year, I'm gardening by going through my pics from different times of the past season, looking for pics of specific flowers for my blog. Usually, I have dreams about gardening a couple times a month, but have only had one so far. Maybe it's because of the blogging. We have melting snow today, as it's currently a warm 50 degrees. I am always excited when the days start getting longer instead of shorter. I feel that I can survive the winter, and hope for the soil to be dry enough the end of February to plant my first lettuce, spinach, radishes, and kale. I figure that I want to get out while I can, and if it rains or snows later, it's OK, because those seeds are in there, ready to grow when the conditions are right. I have had seedlings get snowed on, and still survive. Besides, I am already planting more when I see they are up. I have a plan to put a tomato plant or two in my new flower bed, and try to keep the leaves from touching the dirt, because mine always get diseased and die, and I don't have room in the veggie garden to rotate them well. I have some holes to fill in different beds, including the area by our repaired shed. I plan to put in some not too tall growing goldenrods, coneflowers, asters, and some kind of summer blooming annuals. Sue

That looks so lovely. You've done an excellent job! If you don't mind me asking, what do you stain the concrete with? The pot looks great.

It,s a great area,really does look good,plenty of good surrouding,a good place to go and sit and think out another garden,old English setting,greencroc.

How wonderful that looks, and your Urn with the daisies in it has found pride of place,just lovely.

Hope there is a nice shady spot near by for a comfy seat so you can sit and enjoy the sight in peace and know the very hard work has been done so well.

Yes ,ginnybee and ashmeri :a cup of tea would be beautiful and I have a lovely spot to sit where I can enjoy the garden
MM I have other spots I can put some of the other roses which will be near the new bed and add pink ,white and purple roses around the corner of the bed.The soil has been improved and manure added so we are waiting for it to settle.The pink bed will connect the side garden bed and the new bed.I will plant some more around the front of the house.That is another story.I will just have a few around the front...its good there as it is thank goodness!
The back was the huge job.
So I will have some in pots on the patio.I love that.
So...its a long story but I can see that soon I will be able to relax,think about garden parties and the lovely calm time to enjoy the result of some very hard work over 2-3 years:))

I forgot to add that I am going to try to "age "the stand with builders oxide.It comes in a few colours.
You can buy it from Bunnings its not expensive and not too difficult.Apparantly ,you rub the oxide on ,then hose it off till you get the effect you want.
I havent tried it yet but the bloke at Bunnings said I could easily do it.
