Just Joey Flowering All Winter

All of my roses flower in Winter, they don't do too well in the warmer months so I let them go into dormancy from October till March.

That way I don't have to feed or water very often I also don't have so many caterpillar problems which are in plague proportions in the warmer months.

Still have plenty of Black Spot and Aphids, a very high maintenance plant here but worth growing for those beautiful blooms they produce.

The second last photo was taken yesterday, and the last one I took very early this morning.

This is my favourite rose a beautiful large Hybrid Tea and I guess you can see why... Cheers...Misty.

Just Gorgoeus! Thanks for these beautiful photos, MM. My roses (the few that I have) are freshly pruned sticks only at the moment. Heather

Thank you. I love 2&4 particularly, because of the frills. Orange is also my favorite rose colour.
I wish I had smell-a-vision, as I've read, the perfume is fantastic.
Hamilton-1 hours drive from Toronto has a huge rose garden, in their Royal Botanical gardens, but I didn't see Just Joey there. May be the climate is wrong.
Since I don't have a garden or balcony I enjoy my fragrant plants on my, southern exposure, window sill.

Judith, that sounds like a good plan to me. Actually, my JJ remains in a pot "banished" to my back patio, which receives only about a half-day of dappled sun. Your chosen location sounds a little better, as I don't think I have quite enough sun for ideal growth. I said I'm getting rid of mine, but I have a hard time shovel pruning bushes that don't die on their own. Still, I hate to give a plant to someone when I don't think it will actually do well for them; it's kinda like negative advertising for rose growing. To it's credit, I totally ignore it except for occasional watering, and it is still trucking along. I have had mine only about 3 years. Maybe I should follow the advice above and wait for another year or even 2 to make a final judgment. Meanwhile, Prairie Sunrise is doing beautifully in JJ's old spot. I just got it from Lisa at Countryside last summer, along with Alec's Red. THANKS LISA! Both are gorgeous AND very fragrant! They also are about average for blackspot resistence, which in my area means I have to be diligent with the preventive spraying. No big deal, since I spray everything else anyway.

I didn't make it very clear what I was up to. I have a small area next to the back door. The soil is not good so I'm going to put them in pots. Another advantage with pots is I can over winter them in my greenhouse so hardiness is less critical. Karen, Polka fits what I'm looking for except its' a climber which is probably too big for that area. I picked JJ as I've read that it looks good when open, although I've never seen it. I have a few HT's but only one is nice when open. I didn't use it as an example as it is not widely grown - Limelight. Peace looks good when open so I suppose it's off-spring does too. Several people listed Chicago Peace in a list of roses they like.

I would just add that Just Joey in my garden (and again I'm Southern California) blooms a moderate amount; however, I second the comment that it "puts out basals rarely." The bloom is the largest of just about any rose I have every seen at least in my garden. Some blooms are almost 10" wide when fully open. People always comment on their unusually large size, although it took a couple years for this rose to get going. It is very disease resistant here. The color is of course wonderful and the fragrance is strong to my nose however I find the blooms blow quickly, especially when considering their size.

Will my experience in TN and NC do? Fragrant Cloud is still my favorite HT. Once established it is a robust plant with great bloom production. The petals have heavy substance and the fragrance is incredible. Must be sprayed for BS in the South. I've grown it both grafted and ownroot. Just Joey - I have two ownroot in my garden. I've had it grafted also. Its winter tender, spindly and not all that productive. It does have the most incredibly beautiful fragrant blooms. I have it still because it was my mother's favorite rose. I'm about to pull both out and buy Martha (a sport of ZD) as a replacement tribute to my mother. Cherry Parfait - a sprawling, very productive bush that just pumps out blooms even in heat and drought. It is really more of a shrub than a grandiflora in habit. I love all the color variations in the blooms. No fragrance. Must be sprayed for BS in the south, although it has decent resistance. Peace - I have (finally) a good ownroot clone. Although its currently unhappy because I moved it. The bush is sort of awkward, but its hard to argue with the blooms. There is a reason this rose is so well known, and it is the beauty of the bloom. It is a robust bush once established, but requires very regular protection against BS.

Beautiful colour, so I have made a slide show from bud to full flower-needs a bit of tweaking but looks good.My recently pruned roses are shooting vigorously already.Last year i had bad " white icing" and treated it with white oil. this year all clear at the moment.

That is understandable Heather where you are * The best rose growing state in OZ * You will have beautiful blooms when mine are sleeping for the Summer..And I will be looking forward to seeing yours then.

Inga Yes Orange roses are so beautiful, shame you have not been able to see Just Joey though I am sure you will one day as I don't think the climate would be wrong, roses seem to grow everywhere and in all climates. I can just imagine your Botanic Garden what a picture they must be when all the roses are blooming and the perfume must be heavenly. What a shame you don't have a garden like most of us do but I bet your special window sill looks wonderful..
