Thanks to all of you for your frank advice. I had no idea JJ was so "delicate" in so many areas of the country. Perhaps a cheaper, banded rose would be my best financial bet. It's just awful how I fall in love with certain roses! Well, maybe not awful in a bad way ---- just awful because I sense, from all of your comments, that my heart's going to be broken yet again. And I guess it doesn't matter if my next JJ is own-root or not. But I'm thinking that this time I'll try her in a wind-protected but still sunny spot. Catspa, maybe when I plant my next JJ, I'll throw some sand and rocks into the hole! :)

Tom, I try to avoid being actually IN the sun as much as I can, since I'm always too hot and I've had skin cancer five times. BUT...having said that...having no sunLIGHT is terribly depressing. I'm feeling SAD, myself, even though I know I don't have it to the extent I need treatment for it. But four or five days of unrelenting darkness and grey skies is just too much. I've definitely been feeling depressed. If last night's storm had happened the FIRST night of the rain, it probably wouldn't have upset me nearly as much. I was just outside between showers and looking around more closely, and I think MOST things will survive with some damage pruned off, and some cleaning up. Lots of debris removal will be forthcoming, and there are several plants that I don't think will make it. But the yard won't be as barren as it was after the freeze or anything. And the things that didn't get smashed are going to be really green and happy. It will all end up okay. Just some extra work, and a few replacement plants. Joey still looks like a goner, and I'm seriously worried about my rudbeckia submentosa, which really got flattened. And some of my coleus got broken back to ground level. Those will sprout again, I'm sure. But Joey and the rudbeckia...well, we'll see. I just can't wait to see a brighter sky. When I was younger, I used to love rainy days and living in the northwest was very appealing. I don't think I could do it now, either. Hi Certainly glorious aren't they?? have any guess on how old the large one is ?? I figured the slow growing would be an advantage for me as it would always need some protection at one time or another. Do they have any J. perekensis , "Joey on a stick"?? Have yet to see one except in habitat pix At the nursery they told me it was a bit hardier BUT was even more slow growing.lol Don't know how the one at fairchild is doing but the "Rare plant house" ,greenhouse, was badly damaged during a hurricane .Couldn't find it on the index catalog but haven't looked in a long time. They certainly live up to" Understory palm" Always under heavy growth in pix. last year I found a seedling of Kerriodoxa elegans and have been pleasantly surprised it is already starting mature fronds and under 2 years old!!! I recently moved it up and it never slowed at all. My kind of understory!!! gary

My JJ blooms as often as most of my HT's. , but it is a gangly branched thing. Here it is ( about 6-7 years old) with lots of buds that will be lovely....just too late for the party that I cut it back for. Ah well. Cut back several in Oct., just a little too late. He did not bloom as well this year in our hideous heat. Can only think I didn't hand water enough, and the sun was too hot at times. I'm in so. Ca. coastal/ 6 hours sun. I adore the sweet scented , big apricot blooms. Poor pic trying to get all the many little buds in the pic. I'm betting these blooms will not be so large. Is it the cold nights? I see this often in my autumn blooms. Still, my neighbor's bed faces west, and hers are summer- lovely. My sun is eastern. Well, that's another topic. JJ is worth your patience, imo. Good luck!
