This subject interests me, too,since here in Italy we have serious problems with the heat.I just got Climbing Crimson Glory (I dislike shrub HT's with their awkward, graceless growth habit, but am hoping that in the climbing form this won't be such a problem). My experience with Austin's Falstaff is that this beautiful rose does NOT crisp in hot sun, and it's colour-a very deep purple-red-is so unique. Likewise Tradescant seems promising.But, Daisy, why not take a look at Becky and John Hook's roses ?(La Roseraie Du Désert is the name of their nursery). They have an excellent selection of roses adapted to our hot climates:chiefly teas, chinas and noisettes. My experience with them has been so excellent, I can't recommend them highly enough. I bet they could ship to Crete. Their roses are own-root, so they may appear a bit small to you if in the past you've only had experience with grafted bare-roots, but these are top quality plants IMHO. I just grow the smaller plants along in a vase for their first season,so they get nice and big,though I think this is a matter of personal preference. regards, bart

Kate, thanks for posting your lovely roses. Very good photography, too. Your roses look all very healthy and I am wondering if you spray? If you don't you have to share your secret :-)! I also like my Icebergs, shrubs and climbers and I am not a little bit ashamed of that. I think they are outstanding roses, because they perform so reliable and are very floriferous, at least here in CA. My Burgundy Iceberg rose is in its second year and I like the rose when it has the dark burgundy color I fell in love with, but disliked it when it became screaming pink in the heat of last summer. I threatened to shovel prune it when it turns into this color ever again. This year it didn't so far, so the rose may have gotten the message ;-. On a more serious note, since the heat has stayed the same as last year I think putting down a sulfur/iron soil conditioner has done the trick. Has your Burgundy Iceberg ever changed color to a hot pink?

Redroses, thank you for those kind words. I'm a bit amazed that I can grow good roses in Kansas also. : ) I'm pretty sure I got Boceliande from Palatine Nursery in Canada--excellent place--it grafts on multiflora. My other roses come from all over. For own root roses, I like Roses Unlimited. Chambliss is also good, as is Angel Gardens in Florida. I order some of my roses from David Austin or Regan's Nursery--those are usually grafted on Dr. Huey. But there are at least a half dozen other places I've ordered from also. Sometimes it's a matter of it was the only place that carried that rose, so I ordered from there. I inherited that peony when I moved here a couple decades ago, so I don't know its name for sure. I think it is Cora Stubbs, but it might be Bowl of Beauty. Both are classic peonies. I love it. Transplanted it from a poor location to a good one, and it has been an outstanding spring bloomer ever since. April--as usual, your bouquets of similar colored roses are exquisite! Yahoo, Ingrid!!! I’m thrilled that after all the roses I’ve “copycatted” from you, you ordered one on my recommendation! I do think you will be pleased with Bolero. It’s a blooming machine, and they make wonderful cut flowers. Did I mention the fragrance? Delightful!!! I really love this rose, and would NEVER have ordered two more, if it hadn’t been so wonderful here. The only negative reviews I’ve ever read about Bolero were from a few people who didn’t have enough summer heat for this rose to bloom properly. That’s not an issue for me, you, or Daisy. Bolero usually blooms a creamy white, but sometimes mine blooms with a tinge of soft blush pink. Bolero’s blooms are VERY much your style, Ingrid. We like similar roses, so I think you’ll be very happy with it. May I ask where you ordered from, and when your Bolero is coming? Daisy, I hope you’ll be able to try out Bolero, as well. I too, PREFER OGR’s, but I plant anything that appeals and performs. I’m not prejudiced against modern roses. If I fall in love with a rose, it doesn’t matter to me if it’s old or new. Just think, Daisy. If you hadn’t asked about it here, Ingrid may not have looked into Bolero. I certainly wouldn’t have posted the above photos. You helped me enable Ingrid into a rose for the very first time. Usually, it’s the other way around:). I’m still working on enticing Ingrid into Mel’s Heritage. I think just 3 tall and sturdy pieces of rebar pounded into the ground, would support him, Ingrid. My soil is so rich compared to yours, surely he wouldn’t grow so large so quickly there. He really doesn’t mind pruning or the removal of whole canes, I’m finding. The canes are lightweight and flexible. Canes could be fastened around the “tripod”, and then allowed to cascade down. Notch ear and friends would probably take care of pruning the cascading canes for you. I wouldn’t rule out this gorgeous heat lover, yet. I’m intrigued by your list Maria! I’m impressed/flattered that you know I grow Flamingo Gardens Tea! I forgot to mention that one, but it IS a champ in the heat for me. I’m glad you reminded me. I imagine if I let it out of its pot, it would probably bloom even more. Any rose that will bloom and stay healthy in a pot in full sun here, is a real winner in my book. Those half barrels dry out quickly, but Flamingo Gardens Tea blooms on. I do hate the sight of those ugly spent wads of petals, though. I try to remove them ASAP. My FGT is blooming today.
