Comments (38)cjrosaphile--sorry to hear your Braveheart canes want to lie on the ground. Mine have never done that, so I don't know how typical that is. However, I do remember vaguely that the first year, there was something about Braveheart's shape the bothered me a bit. I can't remember exactly now what it was--maybe top-heavy canes--too many heavy blooms for the canes. However, I propped them up before they had a chance to sink to the ground. Then the next spring, I pruned them differently--maybe lower than normal--so that those heavy blooms wouldn't have the chance to stick out at an angle and then sink when the blooms became full. Wish I could remember details now, but after pruning Braveheart differently than usual, I haven't had the sinking cane syndrome. Just gorgeous blooms! Comments (4)Joan, I hope your porch doesn't face north--meaning there is considerable shade in that area. Roses are sunlovers. But you may already know that. The only red shrub I know that would give true red and that lush full look you want is Braveheart--which I absolutely love. However,it might need occasional spraying for blackspot, although, as a whole, it has good disease-resistance. Since red is a terribly difficult color to catch accurately with a camera, let me assure you that Braveheart is a red red--in fact, a somewhat dark rich red. No purple or orange or cherry pink overtones. The blooms are big, full, and long-lasting, and the re-bloom is good. My one problem with it is that some canes put out so many big blooms that the whole cane starts sinking towards the ground, but I just find a convenient twig in the yard with a v-notch at one end and prop it under the really heavy-blooming canes. The twigs can hardly be seen at all because of the full green foliage. Kate Here is a link that might be useful: Braveheart at helpmefind...See MoreBest Red Roses?
Comments (19)I like Alec's Red more and more. I just got a baby one this past summer (from Lisa at Countryside Roses), and it's little but keeps putting out roses one or two at a time. They are amazingly long-lasting and also extremely fragrant; an almost unique quality. It's barely red, being more coral red or deep deep pink, depending on weather, but it's an attractive color to me, anyway. It's a very full, many-petaled rose, looking like something between a classic hybrid tea rose and an old bourbon rose. Very compact bush, but then I haven't had mine long. I really like Deep Secret too. Deep deep red, modest sized hybrid tea blooms with average staying power, but right up there with Chrysler Imperial, Mr. Lincoln, and Alec's Red for fragrance. Smaller bush, very thorny, but very good disease resistance. I think the bloom form is best in moderate temps. In hot weather, it's still good as a cut rose if cut in bud stage. Erotika, aka Erotica or Eroica, is also super fragrant and crimson red. Very disease resistant. But the bloom form doesn't impress me, yet. I've only had mine a year. I've gotten one or two attractive blooms. The others are "ok" for garden color but not as a cut rose in my estimation. I have Papa Meilland on order for the spring. I can hardly wait. Some of you here have said to be patient, that it takes 3 or 4 years to come into its own and perform really well. I'm still excited. I'm also replacing my Chrysler Imperial, which put out some terrific blooms, but inconsistently, and on a scrawny bush. I'm sure it was a virused plant ($4 from Walmart). So I scrapped it and ordered one from Roses Unlimited after hearing some favorable reports from others who had bought it there. --fingers crossed. I have to mention a mini-flora, Memphis Magic. Totally scentless unfortunately, but Oh my God! Awsomely beautiful black-red velvety blooms that open very slowly and last for two weeks or more. Even after they dry up, whether cut or still on the bush, they still hold their shape and only change color a little. Amazing staying power. Great candidate for dried flowers. Mine was actually purchased as Memphis Music, the striped sport of Memphis Magic, but it had reverted. I've never seen a striped bloom on it. No matter, it's still gorgeous....See MoreThe Mr. Lincoln. The most fragrant of all red roses.
Comments (35)So I got my hands on Mister Lincoln this year and it's growing a lot in the all day sun. I have a huge problem with sun scorch on the blooms. They start out fine, but as soon as they start to open up, by the end of the day, they're toast. Mine are in pots on their own roots. Peak temps are about mid 90s with humidity. I've done my best to give them plenty of water, but it still happens. I can see from Cody's pics they don't mind a lot of sun, so I'm not sure what my problem is. Is it because they're so young? Should I move them, or wait for them to mature more?...See MoreTNY78
