Can i get this . . .

Hi all,

I've just discovered Gotu Kola. Can anyone tell me if i can purchase Gotu Kola (commonly known as Indian Pennywort) in Australia in plant or seed form?? I realise that it is a native of India and the sub-tropics, but I am very interested in trying to grow this herb in my hothouse - has anyone had any luck with it? Thanks in advance,

Look in your local nursery for Arthritis Plant! Yes, it's readily available almost everywhere. Ask your local nursery to get some in for you. It is a groundcover, and if allowed, can take over your entire garden - fairly quickly, too! It is undoubtedly a weed. Needs constantly moist soil, and while it will grow in the sun once established, it actually prefers quite shady, and prefers warm, humid conditions.

It's Centella Asiatica, or Hydrocotyle asiatica, and if you want it for medicinal purposes, you might prefer to buy it in capsule form. I've seen it labelled Hydrocotyle. It is sometimes also called Brahmi, not to be confused with Water Hyssop (Bacopa monnieri) also called Brahmi. Check the labels for the botanical name.

If your nursery can't get it, try All Rare Herbs in Queensland, or Richter's at Eschol Springs in WA.

Thank you so much!! I will do that. First I better tell you the area we're in. We live in Illinois between the Mississippi River and Rock River in the Quad Cities (Ever hear of the Rock Island lines or John Deere of Moline, Illinois?...well, we're from the Rock Island/Moline area.) Here is the wading bird that's so dark looking. I'm so sorry these photos are so small and hard to see...there was a huge marshy area between me and the birds. I'm in the market for a better zoom lens, but WOW have you seen the price of them?? This is the swooper...some sort of plover or sandpiper maybe? At first I thought it was a swallow of some sort...then when I saw the photo I thought maybe a killdeer, but I don't think so. Sorry these are poor photos too...it flashed by me so quickly, I just snapped away as a spur of the moment thing! Would someone please confirm that this is a female redwing blackbird? This one was from a different day in the woods. There were lots of orioles, bluebirds, red-bellied woodpeckers, and a myriad of other birds in this area. I was wondering if it could be a female oriole...the tail doesn't seem long enough. Again, sorry for the quality, it was a long way away from me. I did unspeakable things to this photo to get it to even show any markings but the color is just not there. Thanks so much for any help! Ginni (the bird challenged)

It could take a few days in the damp bark to bounce back, so be patient with it. Orchids seem to do everything at a glacial pace. A bottom leave may yellow and fall off ... still okay. Even if the older leaves never fully plump up again, once you get the watering balance right, you'll see each new leaf come in flat and shiny. Monday a coworker gave me a pair of orchids stuffed in a small pot with tons of moss (it was a gift, and now that the flowers have finished, he doesn't want it). I've separated them into their own pots with bark. I guess I didn't soak the new bark enough when I first repotted, because they, too, began to look more dehydrated! I've just finished soaking the pots for 30 minutes ... here's hoping Monday brings more perked up orchids!
