When I look at the 'big' GW and see events such as lily bulb swaps, or indepth discussions around growing indigenous plants; when I look at the plump but surplus narcissus bulbs I'm lifting at the moment - I wish this was a more active site and had a few more of 'life's little elegances'.

Dear Father Christmas...

I would really like - a plant trade/swaps and plant finder facility;

leads to particular tools and planters;

threads around using native plants for bonsai;

threads on 'how to develop your own garden style' and garden renewal and ecological restoration;

and lots of keen gardeners of all sorts of experience levels to share with.

Please. I'll even be good and, and stay out of the garden centres for a whole month! Promise!!!

I have now had the M series double oven for 5 years. (I posted on this thread before if you scroll up. FIRST ISSUE: I ran a self clean 2 times so far. 1st time, the blue enamel cracked a lot with a lot of debree. I have called Wolf and they basically ignored my problem. I didn't even get a call back. 2nd time I ran the self clean was 6 months ago. Same issue but lesser cracking. once the self clean was finished, I ran a wipe and collected debree again. SECOND ISSUE: the fan noise. goodness gracious is it loud. first when it starts heating up, and then once you are done cooking, when it cools off. you can hear it on another room. so would I ever buy it again? 💯 NOT.

There is a lot of passion here. Rightfully so. Rose gardeners are especially passionate people. We attempt to learn, are not afraid to act, and enjoy doing. What I have found, in this antique rose forum, is that I am able to learn from others here, read their perspectives, then take action in my own garden in order to create my own experience. Conversations about roses within this forum are wonderful, but the magic happens in my own yard when I apply what I learned in the conversation. I believe the same can be said for this particular thread. Talking about our different political perspectives is interesting. But the real magic happens through our actions, regardless of where we stand on the left or on the right. This can be something as simple as supporting a news organization that aligns with your own perspective or signing petitions. It can also be more involved and personal, such as volunteering your time and expertise. Regardless of where you stand politically, you can see an area of need within this current political climate and choose fill it. Even being just one person, we can each make a difference. That is obvious within each of our gardens, as we cultivate the soil. We can also cultivate change in other areas of life too. I said this previously, but I volunteer at the VA hospital, at community kitchens, at an elder life program at a local hospital, and also by speaking to youth and women's groups about health and fitness. I do this because I see areas of need within populations of the elderly, veterans, and women and children... areas I have skills and knowledge in. Even though I was a single parent for many years, even though I work, and even though I am going back to school. I find the time because it is important to me... and each time I volunteer I leave feeling as though I have gained more than I could ever give. I also feel as though I am taking actions based on my beliefs and making a real difference. I volunteer side by side with other democrats and republicans with many different political views. But we each saw an area of need and chose to fill it. There is common ground. Regardless of my own political views, regardless of the political climate, regardless of the political choices being made in our country and others, I choose to be the change I personally want to see in the world. I am only one person, but my actions matter. I believe each of yours do too. The people within this forum are absolute do-ers. I completely believe in each of your abilities, because I have seen what you can each do in your gardens... and I personally believe the same life skills from gardening translate over into so many other areas. Action for change can be small. It doesn't have to be something that burdens you. It can be uplifting. Here's a quick article with ideas of different ways you can be politically active. What would it do to the exterior of the home? Cannot tell of the room/wall is even large enough for another window. You would hire a carpenter if there is room. What kind of siding? Labor probably $3k, COLA dependent, plus a window.

I am sure Santa will not hold you to that promise. I am really hoping to get a day in the garden before Christmas, at the moment it doesn't seem likely. Do you think we could pospone Christmas for another week? Aren't the roses looking great this year?

Yes, about the roses - and not many aphids, either. The Stanwell Perpetual has outdone itself this year. And the two Gallicas. Must be all that rain.

And it's not set to improve greatly..."A complex system lies..." Perhaps Huey will relent for a couple of days over Christmas.

Did I say the roses are looking good? After all the wind Wellington has had this weekend we are lucky if there are any flowers left. Unfortunately with all this rain and the soil temp getting warmer the weeds are growing thick and fast.

At the rate the blackbirds have been working the beds there's scarcely a weed to be seen!

One thing I am noticing about the roses is the number of new shoots coming from down the stems and off the bud head. I can only put it down to the persistant rain - and perhaps to the dollops of manure I added a time ago.

I'm really pleased to see this outburst of new growth because I inherited the roses from a drought-stricken garden and it's taken years for them to settle in. All reds and scented, so someone had a romantic streak. One did have a label - 'Erotica' - large, somewhat blowsy, and very slow to make any decent new growth.

In my small 'collection' of miniatures -'Simplex' is flowering, and the indefatigable 'Green Ice'. The others are taking a deep breath to celebrate the end of the opium poppies, then they'll consider putting out buds.

Anyone growing a red rose 'Fisherman's Friend'?

hi vetivert and all. since your talking about roses growing and weeds coming up, i've guessed it is spring down under. winter officailly began here last week. or is it summer there?

It is supposed to be Summer, but warm sunny days are few and far between over most of the country. We had a wet winter with flooding, now a wet Summer. Roses have benefited, citrus seem to have suffered. As a professional, part time, gardener I couldn't believe how thick and fast the soft weeds grew before Christmas. I couldn't believe the weeds in my own garden by the time I finally got around to giving it some attention.
