Growing from Seed

What do you wish you started or wished you didn't?

I was going through more seed catalogues and pondering what I should have started this year. Then I was looking at my seedlings and deciding what I am NOT going to start next yearÂ

What are your thoughts?

Next year I for sure want to start geraniums, double begonias (from seed, not tubers as I am doing this year), plumbago, alyssum, and I want to experiment with (10) or so different types of petunias for the best overall effect all summer.

Next year I for sure will NOT start, corkscrew vines (they are huge and they now have their own area but the final decision will be made after their summer performance) and double impatiens (next year I will buy 10 plants and propagate them from stem cuttings to get the 50 or so I need).

Lets hear itÂ. What are you already wishing you planted/didnÂt plant?

I haven't started much yet. I have a bunch of geraniums. Most started from cuttings, but some started from seed. They take a long time to mature from seed. I have some begonias that I saved the tubers from last year. They are just starting to leaf. My Impatiens I intend to start tomorrow. I grow tempo Impatiens. They put on a great show and are the earliest to flower. I prefer them to the doubles. Anything else will be started in the greenhouse next month.

I plan out my beds in a half hearted way when I'm contemplating my flower choices. I keep a book with genuses and their varieties that I have ordered and make notes in it about them during the summer. Over the years I have discovered which plants like which conditions in my yard. I mainly order the ones that have performed well in the past but I'm always open to new ones and include some of them in my order. Some of these I would grow again--others not.

I always say I'm going to cut back but I always grow too much. I have a neighbor who is a gardener and we swap plants.

I usually grow Petunias. For grandiflora I like the Storm variety; The blossoms don't droop in the rain. I grow the Grandiflora glorious mix double petunias amd the milliflora Picobella. The last are small plants with small petunia flowers that work very well for edging a bed. I don't grow the trailing petunias because I don't have many hanging planters or a place to put them.

I wish I hadn't started so MANY of everything. I feel like it's been non-stop transplanting for weeks now! I guess I should have more faith in my germinating/growing on abilities and not sow all the extras 'just in case'.

We built our small commercial greenhouse 2 years ago... I wish I knew about self-sufficient greenhouse - accumulating greenhouse heat through the day and use it through the night. Initial investment a bit costly, but it would pay off in couple a years. I would definitely do it second time around. I wish I knew better to install solid concrete floor. Fine rock or gravel is paradise for greenhouse pest like aphids, thrips to overwinter. I wish I installed overhead watering hoses (not sprinkler, actual hoses). Them "snakes" on the ground are frustrating... Stuck on something, kinked, tangled, knocked plants on the floor, not mentioning tripping in loops. I wish I had my benches narrower and shorter that would give me more flexibility to play around and create nice displays. I wish we installed overhead propane heater in different spot then above a bench. When heater runs it blows hot air to my bench creating "dead zone". Hot air burns all seedlings in its way. I have 10' X 3' unusable bench space due to that. I hope it was helpful! Enjoy!

My NEVER AGAIN list includes: adenophora, snow on the mountain, lamb's ears, japanese artimesia. I think the "cherry bells" are pretty, but they came up everywhere so I yanked them! I actually have had no trouble with a lot of the plants you all have chosen here. No prob with daisies, mock orange, astrantia, bee balm, astilbe, etc. Have had absolutely NO luck with foxgloves, coreopsis "early sunrise" and "limerock ruby", or gaillardia "burgundy". My oriental poppies do well, but I, too am thinking they are not worth the trouble. I pulled my lady's mantle this year, with limited garden space I prefer "showier" plants. Some of you got my "Always Afternoon" daylilies because they were an off color in my soil, I am also pulling my "black eyed stella", and possibly a couple more, same reason as lady's mantle. There are others I have difficulty growing, but this is all I can think of off the top of my head. Linda

I agree that research is essential. Everyone has been seduced by glossy pictures at garden nurseries or has overlook good roses based on pics. For example, if I didn't read glowing reviews on Julia Child on this forum, it wouldn't be a rose I would had bought had I seen it at the nurseries. At glance, it looks just like any yellow rose that is available. But fellow rosarians can't be wrong, especially from so many people from different climates and countries. It is definitely one of my favourite rose so far. In my experience it is better to spend a bit more money on strong plant than to buy cheaper weaker ones. This may not always be the case but a strong plant with strong canes is essential in my opinion, especially for those of us who live in colder climates. After so many years growing roses, disease resistant varieties and vigor is on top of my list. I would be willing to forego most roses no matter how beautiful they are especially if they are famously prone to diseases and are not vigorous. Of course, I have made exceptions but there is no point in wasting time to nurse unhealthy plants that takes a lot of your time and energy and space for that matter. Last but not least, do not stress yourself out with rose problems such as Japanese beetles and blackspot. I admit that I have been beaten down last year by Japanese beetles. However, I am trying to find other ways to deal with them. I may experiment with the traps as a few gardeners I know has found to be very effective for them. I started to buy more bs resistant roses and I found it really helps. I still get bs at the end of summer but they are more minimal. The last advice I have is don't subject yourself to a heart attack if your rose died. It happens like everything else in life. There are so many roses to grow and take the opportunity to grow a new one.

My sympathies, Lars. I can at least still use my CPAP. I had surgery for Carpal Tunnel and think I've already damaged it today. Will call Plastics at the VA tomorrow and ask them. I'm a Vietnam era veteran and get all my medical needs from the VA. It's a 1 hr. 15 minute drive there in Indianapolis and I drove myself. The only problems coming home was had to turn the key to start as well as put in drive with my left hand as well as having to reach across the steering wheel with my left hand to turn on the wiper blades. Did that at a stop light. I'm alone and there were a few things I did with my right hand today that I shouldn't have. Hope you're doing better and heal quickly. Madonna

I wish I had not sown scrophularia nodosa (figwort) indoors. The germination suggestions indicated it could take several weeks at 40F to germinate, or might respond to warm/cold/cool cycles totalling several weeks. I decided to give sown seeds a warm moist period and then place outdoors for some weeks of overnight frost, but they germinated in about 8 days from sowing while still indoors....are now taking up space not designated for them under lights until I can harden them off. Came up like cress, every seed must have germinated.
