I'm wondering if you might be in the wrong forum for getting input on this. Your question regarding whether you can attract butterflies (I assume) without also attracting larvae to eat your veggies is probably best directed to experienced veggie gardeners, and the rest perhaps to the shrub or perennials forum? But the best solution might just be to wander down to your local nursery and see what they have in stock that will meet your needs. That often drives a person's plant decisions anyway!

tnveggie- indeed! I may have to try one. I have 16 (I think!) containers out with mostly tomatoes and a few other veggies, that I am hoping they will leave alone, though I am prepared to wrap them with wire if I have to. estreya- I'm outside of San Diego. I'm not aware of any jack rabbits in our area, but I'll keep my eyes out for those as well. Since I'm in a more rural area, the rabbits are just prolific here. In the spring, I can count 15+ running around the side of the road in yards with in just a few blocks in about any neighborhood here.

Hi Bwaze, I feel your pain! Although the rabbits that eat me out of house and garden are not that tame, I can get really close to them. I have read everything I can to ward off the little devils. I have heard spreading human hair by your plants will keep them away. Have not tried that one. I also read using kitty litter will work [used of course]. I tried that, but the bunnies came right along and ate my Sliver lace vine right down to the coffee can I had put around it for protection!! So, out of frustration, I planted marigolds around my cinnamon vine and silver lace vine. Does it work? No not really. I ended up just sitting out a kitty litter box poop & all right next to my vine. Those waskally wabbits ate my : Hen & Chicks, Pepper Plants, Petunia's, gazanias. This has been a very frustrating year. You may want to not make friends with it. Maybe he/she will leave your yard for greener pastures?? Good Luck, Friesfan1

I was talking to hubby about your problem. When he was married the first time, he had a huge veggie garden, in the burbs, where rabbits roamed free. He was also one of the few people with no rabbit problems. He grew three kinds of marigolds around the perimeter of his garden, small, normal, and tall sizes. Rodents don't like the smell of the flowers, so they don't go through them! (Take a sniff, if you try this, and you'll understand why they don't like it. LOL) He did say they had to be grown close together, too, but I've never grown marigolds without them naturally growing close together. Looking at your picture, marigolds look like they'd make the garden look beautiful with your fence!
