Frieda, I've been meaning to start a similar thread myself and just hadn't taken the time. So thank you. You have a much better memory than I have. I can remember the books RPers have recommended, but I would be hard pressed to recall the person who recommended them. I'm grateful to all of you whoever you are. Some favorites that I can recall:

One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd - Jim Fergus
Life of Pi - Yann Martel - I'd heard about this several places but the RP discussion(s) led me to read it and I'm so glad I did.
Lonesome Dove - Larry McMurtry - again, I'd heard of this but finally read it based on glowing RP reviews.
The Widow's War - Sally Gunning - which I really liked
The Guernsey Literary and PPP Society - which I loved

and of course -- I Capture the Castle - Dodie Smith

The first book from an RP recommendation was Period Piece: A Cambridge Childhood by Gwen Raverat. Thank you Frieda for that. G R was one of the many grandchildren of the great Charles Darwin (who's 200 hundred years since his birth is being celebrated in the UK 2009) and in her own right an accomplished produced of wood-cut illustrations.

Many other titles I jumped on with enthusiasm when I 'arrived' here, were either not available from the library, or turned out not to be my style, but I soon learned of the RP'ers who had tastes similar to my own.
Shall I mention The DA Vinci Code? What a load of piffle! And, at the time, I was severely taken-to-task for saying so. :-)

And Kath put me in touch with the historical novels of 'Ariana Franklin' who used to know as Diana Norman and under both names writes really enjoyable stuff.

Who told me about Adriana Trigiani and Barbara Kinsolver? Both enjoyed in moderation (ie not one after the other).

One thing I have wanted to ask. When I first posted here it was as a response to a question about a remark in an English who-dunnit.
The character say something like "Who'd uv Tottenham'd it"
I took this to be some sort of 'rhyming slang' for Tottenham Court Rd, in London, so "Tottenham'd it" might rhyme with "who'd uv thought it"
I was howled-down by a US RP'er who asked how I could possible think court rhymes with thought.
So, how do you in the US, pronounce court so it doesn't rhyme with thought . . . or taught, caught, sport, nought etc. sorry US spell-check doesn't recognise 'nought' . . or 'recognise' . . .

Vee, I cannot see, as an American, how "court" would ever rhyme with "thought." It's the "R".

Right off the top of my head, I know I read Henry James, Margaret George, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and reread To Kill a Mockingbird because of RP. I know there are others-oh...Louise Penny. I am eternally grateful to whoever pointed me in her direction-I just can't remember!

(caveat-I am from Eastern US-Philadelphia suburbs-we have many many ways to pronouce things over here!) Vee-as wood says, it's the "r", which, in court, we pronounce as we do cork, snort, snore, bore, door. Court does rhyme with sport.
The vowel sound in thought is more an "aw" or "au" as we pronounce thaw. Phoentically, it is the o with the dot over it-in court, it is the same o with dot, but joined with an r.

Thinking about Sarah Canary and presto! she appears. Vicki, of course, I will always associate you with Sarah Canary. I still dream from time to time that I'm on a harrowing canoe trip with Chin and BJ. And you were the one who gave me heads up on The Thirteenth Tale, which made a helluva discussion thread!

Woodnymph is responsible for one of my favorite books of this RP decade (almost a decade anyway!): Ladurie's Montaillou: The Promised Land of Error. Such a delight to know that folk are always folk, squabblewise -- centuries ago and probably for centuries to come.

I don't recall who first mentioned The Terror by Dan Simmons, but I'm so glad you did and I thank you!!

Sorry, but I'm still flummoxed by court, sport, short thought, thaw etc; to us in England/UK they ALL have an 'aw/or' (ie the same) sound!

As for books I was introduced to here - well, here are just a few:-

House of Stairs by William Sleator - the very first book which I sought out due to a recommendation on RP. YA fiction really, but a terrific story.
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, which I loved.
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, which I didn't.
The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, which is wonderful, and led me to the rest of them (and also a first-edition collection!)
The Time-Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, which is a girl-book. (But excellent, nevertheless).
The Mayor of Casterbridge - a deserved classic.
The Dark Tower series, and also Bag of Bones by Stephen King - I really wasn't interested in reading anything by him, but Rayma wore me down in the end...! ;-)

I'm sure there are many more.

Angle of Repose is one of the best RP recommendations for me.

Cece has given me several mystery authors I was not familiar with, but, as in Frieda's other post, I can't remember who they are. Thanks, anyway!

Giles Blount is another one from RP, but I'm not sure who recommended him.

Interestingly, it was a search for info on The Go-Between that lead me to this site - about 6+ years ago. Started it a couple of times, but I still have never finished it.

Frieda - I'm glad that B.J. and Chin (two of my favorite fictional characters) still reside in your memory. And although I can't recall whether or not I actually finished "The Thirteenth Tale," I'm glad it engendered such a great discussion.

As you can see, I take quite a few of your suggestions! I think the only ones I didn't like were The Ha-Ha, The Confessions of Max Tivoli and Mary Modern. Everything else I really enjoyed!

You guys have opened up my reading horizons so much over the years that it is hard to know where to begin. Here is where I get most of my reading suggestions and my reading list (and associated TBR pile) has expanded exponentially due to you all being so enthusiastic and curious about the world and willing to share your reading loves.

Two authors who definitely came to me from RP were Barbara Pym and Deborah Moggach (my latest favorite person). Oh, and also Angela Thirkell (although she is not my really one of the favorite authors).

Can't forget the wonderful "Angle of Repose" either - one of the best reads of 2008.

Thanks to everyone at RP - my reading life would be very empty if not for you all.

It seems that every thread some ends up mentioning Susan Hill's The Lady in Black. I had never heard of it before joining RP. I read it from start to finish on a rainy afternoon just before Halloween a few years back. A perfect afternoon!

The Morland Dynasty series by Cynthia Harrod Eagles which I have loved, as has my mom.
Susan Hill-I especially love her mystery series with Simon S.
Probably upon reflection most of the British authors I read-many thanks for many wonderful books!!!!
I know there are lots more.
Oh- almost forgot Lonesome Dove- I NEVER would have read that one, but I loved it.

Oh, hooray! I just got an e-mail from Amazon saying that they have shipped to me The Measure of Days, the latest Morland book available in the U.S. I had forgotten that RPers were responsible for my discovering these wonderful books. I am eternally grateful.

Virtually all of the books I have read in the last few years have been recommended here. Just a few stand-outs, ones I certainly would not have discovered on my own:

Angle of Repose - Wallace Stegner
Cloud Atlas - I had tried to read it, put it down as inpenetrable, tried again for a discussion here and now it one of my all-time favorites
Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - like many people, I was not going to read it because of the hopelessly twee title. Have read it twice and am busy looking up the many literary references in this beautiful work.
Harry Potter series - another work I wouldn't have read if RP hadn't liked it.
Just about everything by George MacDonald Fraser, particularly his MacAuslan stories
PG Wodehouse - his work needs no commentary from me!
A great deal of poetry that has been posted over the years
Paul Gallico - I would not have run across his work on my own.

I'm sure I'm leaving out a lot of great stuff. It's fun to think back and remember.

Woohoo! Glad to see so many people enjoying the Morland series - I really do think it is a stand out in its genre.

For me, there are so many good books I have read since I came here, but to be honest (see Frieda's thread about book memory) I don't remember which are recommendations from RPers except:

Being around books every day at work is wonderful, but makes it hard to remember where I first heard of a book.

RP's talk has encouraged me to read a number of books with which I may have been familiar but hadn't yet read. RPers, however, get all the credit for getting me to read Kristin Lavransdatter which I absolutely loved. I had never heard of it before RP, wouldn't have chosen it based on its description and my local library didn't have it. Thank you, RP!

I have to say that since finding RP I have read more books than ever before. My TBR list has also grown because of this forum! So, I will just say thanks to everyone for inspiring me to read even more!

Cmk-I read The Autobiography of Henry VIII while recovering from a particularly horrible bout of the flu several years ago. I have the book about Mary Queen of Scots, and did start it once, but her books require time to wallow in them. I have started a shelf of "after the wedding" books, and that book was one of the first I put on it!
I also have to thank whoever it was who mentioned that they were enjoying Will Thomas' books. I just finished the 4th and love them!
