It's not salty where these plants live. It's just ordinary desert sand/gravel/rock. The Salton Sea must be 6 or 7 miles away, and more than 800 ft. lower in elevation. The SS is below sea level, its current surface averaging -227 ft. I only mention the SS as an obvious landmark for someone trying to locate this site in a general atlas.

Nancy - My Born to Run didn't even scape this year. So I didn't get the chance to bemoan its splotchy blooms. Billy the Kid is not wowing me. It has short scapes, only a few buds, and the blooms are not even showing the applique pattern. I'm hoping subsequent blooms will look better. The blooms were a lot prettier last year. Kay - I'm not sure Abilene Lillian likes this climate. Only one of six fans scaped. I thought maybe a coreopsis was blocking its sun, so I dug it up and moved it about a week ago when we were having cooler temps. Still no scapes on those other fans. I'm glad to hear you're getting lots of rebloom. I have rebloom scapes coming on five daylilies now. I hope there will be some others. Julia - No Boys Allowed is a pretty one. I realize this is an old thread, but for anyone searching for similar info...Tree of Life Nursery is an awesome resource. It's great to visit, too, (in San Juan Capistrano) but the website has a ton of detailed guidance on Calif. native plants. And re manzanita, I don't know what's happening in San Diego, but up here in coastal OC, it grows all over the place (almost down to the ocean). Big Berry Manzanita is my favorite but there are hundreds of others. Calscape is the best source for info. @Mrs.McConnell’s Algebra I, I'd love to know what you ended up planting and how it worked out! p.s. I'm also doing a native plant garden, front and back, partly because of an environmentally-oriented son. Killed our lawn 10-12 years ago after he (then age 9) was hounding us about it. :)
