Which Camera

This year I found a camera (Canon Powershot G1) in our house that wasn't getting much use so I decided to try it out. After learning how to use it (for the most part), I got really into it. This camera does fine for taking pics of reptiles and flowers, but I have now decided that I need to get a camera that can take a little better quality photos and has a zoom lense (or one that I can attach) good enough to take bird and mammal photos. At first I thought, well I might as well go ahead and get a D-SLR but then I saw this Kodak Easyshare DX6490 with a 10X zoom lense. My question is should I get this Kodak camera for 400$ or the Canon EOS Digital Rebel with a 18-35mm lense for 1000$. Is the Canon that much better than the kodak.
